Excellent podcast. Sensible, knowledgeable researcher who eschews binary choices and promotes balance and comprehensiveness. Have turned to Pearson over and over again through the years.
Would have liked more specific questions / discussion on leveled texts, what Shanahan and others have to say about this, etc. Felt that avoiding this topic was a bit of dodge.
I tried listening to the episode on great retention laws… this is the same ideologically driven, generic scientism that has ruined our education system in many states.
There was no discussion of the cost-benefit analysis of the broader issues of social promotion. It’s just the classic “retention policies a bad” narrative that’s supposedly backed up by data, even though new studies have challenged that long held belief.

But why did they stop?
Listening to this podcast has been inspiring and affirming. Jennifer speaks with some of the major players and researchers of literacy and provides practical applications for the classroom. She is always open to hear new voices and perspectives. I have grown so much as an educator listening to the latest research and its applications to the classroom. Keep it coming !!
Some episodes are good and some are horrible. The discussion at the end of some episodes were very counter to the researchers position. The understanding of the panel on set for variability was problematic. There is a strong bias to Balance Literacy.
