What a wild week in space news! We were all set to discuss Starship Test Flight 12 and NASA's recent press conference updating their lunar base plans, when on Thursday night, Blue Origin lost a New Glenn rocket on the pad during a static test. The ex... more

When one ponders the diet of Mars-bound astonauts, oysters don't often come to mind... but they should. As it turns out, the plucky bivalves have much to offer space voyagers, including water filtration and a ready source of protein. Jacob Scoccimerr... more

Poor Mars. After a warm, wet childhood, the planet dried out and became cold and arid. And why? Mostly because it lost most of its atmosphere, scraped away by solar radiation. NASA's Maven mission studied the phenomenon of atmospheric loss for years,... more

Many of us grew up idolizing astronauts as the best of the best that America—and other nations—have to offer. After leaving NASA, many of them go on to relatively routine careers in business or academia, but some stay "on mission" and continue strivi... more

  • Informative and entertaining

Rod and Tariq put on an entertaining show full of informative stories and interesting guests. I’ve enjoyed tuning in for years. To all the reviews complaining about the so-called political nature of this show please grow up. I listen to podcasts for information and often opinions other than mine talk to a mirror if you only want to hear what you already know. Keep up the great work guys.

  • Episode 178, "Tell it to the Mountain," was not about space

This Week in Space is usually very good, but this episode went down a political rabbit hole. Some episodes touch on national politics, but they stick to relevant topics (e.g., NASA budget, administration priorities). This episode fell off the wagon with a political wanna-be spouting about the 1st Amendment, Texas politics and other topics unrelated to space. I couldn't finish the episode. I'm not going to unsubscribe - yet. Hopefully this is a single aberration. If it happens again, count me out... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

TWiS 211: Oysters in Space - With Jacob Scoccimerra of Monolith Space
Q: What brought you to this moment and how did you end up starting Monolith Space?
I studied chemical engineering, worked at Nanoracks and Interstellar Lab, and then started Monolith Space after a friend suggested exploring oysters in space, which grew into a broader mission around bioregenerative systems.
TWiS 210: ESCAPADES at Mars - Dr. Robert Lillis of the Mars ESCAPADE Mission
Q: What about the loiter and Earth gravity assist makes ESCAPADE unique or risky?
The loiter phase and the first-ever powered Earth gravity assist are bold and risky choices that enable an accelerated, flexible path to Mars, potentially enabling multiple missions to be launched over a longer window rather than within a single narrow launch slot.
TWiS 210: ESCAPADES at Mars - Dr. Robert Lillis of the Mars ESCAPADE Mission
Q: As principal investigator, is this mission like your baby, and how did you become PI?
Becoming a PI involves persistent advocacy and leadership in proposing the mission, building support among NASA and university teams, and managing the science goals, budget, and team dynamics, with the process varying by individual.
TWiS 210: ESCAPADES at Mars - Dr. Robert Lillis of the Mars ESCAPADE Mission
Q: Can you explain to us what ESCAPADE is?
ESCAPADE is a twin-satellite Mars orbiter designed to sample the near-Mars space environment in a way that allows a stereo understanding of atmospheric escape and space weather, something a single spacecraft can't do effectively.
TWiS 207: What, This Again? - Attempted Cuts to the NASA Budget
Q: So maybe you can walk us through what's going on and then we'll get to your concerns.
The plan is to push back on a proposed 27 budget that would cut NASA's funding, especially the science budget, and to emphasize that the cuts are not thoughtful or strategic. There is concern about how these cuts would affect ongoing missions, the pipeline for new missions, and the broader leadership in space exploration.
