  • Best in space!

Off-Nominal is quickly becoming my favorite space-related podcast. Jake and Anthony strike the perfect balance between solid space content and great comedy. It’s always a fun listen—and there’s booze involved, so really, what could go wrong?

  • Informative but too much forced laughter on bad jokes. I am done… unsubscribing

Interesting but the very forced laughter is super annoying. Signing OUT

  • Sound quality

I enjoy the content of this show very much, but I find myself not listening much anymore. Jake’s sound quality is so bad it’s difficult to listen to. Each and every guest has better sound quality than one of the hosts, I get lost in the roominess of Jake’s mic, and it’s often hard to understand what he is saying, or I just don’t care. It would really benefit the show to sort this problem out.

  • Funny and informative. I do wish they would drink even more however. Usually they only have one drink, which isn't enough for maximum entertainment.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

241 - Maybe the Denver Airport (with Andrew Rush)
Q: How does the beaming work, specifically the two-satellite energy transfer?
A power node satellite collects sun energy with Fresnel lens collectors, concentrates it and uses a multi-wavelength laser system to beam energy to client satellites; the recipient satellites convert the received photons back into electrical power via their solar arrays, effectively transferring power through space.
241 - Maybe the Denver Airport (with Andrew Rush)
Q: So what is Star Catcher in simple terms for someone who hasn't followed space power before?
Star Catcher is building a space power grid that beams solar energy from one satellite to others using a targeted energy beam, enabling higher power for satellites without each craft needing its own heavy power source, which could unlock new capabilities like space-based data centers and high-power satellites.
239 - Let’s Go Swimming (with Jennifer Vaughn)
Q: What is the core mission of The Planetary Society under your leadership?
To advance public exploration and understanding of space by communicating the importance of science, inspiring engagement, and building coalitions across government, academia, industry, and philanthropy to support ambitious missions like Mars exploration.
237 - Farside Standard Time (with Kelsey Young)
Q: How did human observers complement instrument data during Artemis II?
Humans provided color perception, context, and field observations that enhanced data interpretation and guided imaging and sampling efforts.
237 - Farside Standard Time (with Kelsey Young)
Q: What was the biggest challenge in planning for the flyby in terms of lighting and targeting?
Managing illumination, lunar phase, and the targets so that the crew could observe relevant features while meeting science objectives and ensuring safety.
