  • Mick West??

I was a regular listener until the episode where the host lauds Mick West, who is no more qualified to analyze video than you or I.

  • Manned Missions are such a waste

I am finding the bias of this show tilted so far to manned missions to the moon, mars, and space that it is hard to keep listening to.

IMO this pursuit is such a waste of time and resources and adds very little to man’s knowledge and understanding of the universe that cannot be obtained by much less costly unmanned missions.

It is such an ego trip brought to you by the Billionaires Ego Industrial Complex.

I wish you would address this issue.

  • for space and science enthusiasts

As an amateur learning skywatching through a telescope: I started about 20years ago reading www.universetoday.com which introduced me to Universe today. When I discovered Fraser Cain doing youtube interviews with Astronomers and other scientists, I became hooked. Now the website, newsletter and shows are updated often and regularly. But I found that I mostly enjoyed listening to it. Thats where these Apple podcasts and google podcasts come in really handy. Thank-you Fraser and the team at univer... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Q&A+] What If We Had Another Earth Instead of The Moon?
Q: What is the long-term vision for Moon and Earth presence—will the Moon become a new outpost similar to the ISS?
The host envisions both an orbital station and a permanently inhabited Moon base, with ongoing spacefaring presence across multiple locations in the solar system to sustain exploration and research.
[Q&A+] What If We Had Another Earth Instead of The Moon?
Q: Dan Chabby asks how a binary Earth would affect our space technology and civilization.
The host explains that in a binary system, the shared gravity and resources could accelerate habitation and trade between worlds, potentially advancing technology as civilizations leverage dual habitats, though practical challenges would be immense.
[Q&A+] We Were Promised a Flood of Vera Rubin Discoveries. Where Are They?
Q: Henry Warren asks if von Neumann probes are coming soon and what it would take to categorize neighboring star systems.
The current reality is that we are very far from building self-replicating probes; practical tests are only just starting (like the Blue Alchemist line with ISRU concepts), and real autonomous asteroid- or lunar-based self-replication would require decades of advances in 3D manufacturing, propulsion, and robust robotics before any kind of galaxy-spanning probes could be feasible.
[Q&A+] What Happens If Somebody Claims Mars?
Q: Would there be a practical path to a Martian base that could eventually self-sustain and challenge Earth's dominance, as popularized in science fiction?
A fully self-contained, economically sustainable Martian base would require a future where the solar system's economy can pay for such infrastructure and maintenance, along with technological advances and political will; until then, Mars remains prohibitively expensive with uncertain returns, making 'The Expanse'-style independence unlikely in the near term.
[Q&A+] What Happens If Somebody Claims Mars?
Q: Do inflatable modules work on the Moon for a permanent habitat or rescue scenarios?
Inflatable habitats have been demonstrated on Earth orbiting platforms and would theoretically function on the Moon; recent and historical tests show such structures could form the core of lunar habitats and rescue aids, suggesting a Moon-based inflatable station is plausible given the right deployment and life-support systems.
