  • Mick West??

I was a regular listener until the episode where the host lauds Mick West, who is no more qualified to analyze video than you or I.

  • Manned Missions are such a waste

I am finding the bias of this show tilted so far to manned missions to the moon, mars, and space that it is hard to keep listening to.

IMO this pursuit is such a waste of time and resources and adds very little to man’s knowledge and understanding of the universe that cannot be obtained by much less costly unmanned missions.

It is such an ego trip brought to you by the Billionaires Ego Industrial Complex.

I wish you would address this issue.

  • for space and science enthusiasts

As an amateur learning skywatching through a telescope: I started about 20years ago reading www.universetoday.com which introduced me to Universe today. When I discovered Fraser Cain doing youtube interviews with Astronomers and other scientists, I became hooked. Now the website, newsletter and shows are updated often and regularly. But I found that I mostly enjoyed listening to it. Thats where these Apple podcasts and google podcasts come in really handy. Thank-you Fraser and the team at univer... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

[Q&A+] How Hot Are Black Holes?
Q: Arjun, could we detect the Oort Clouds or Kuiper Belts of exosystems?
The guest explains that exoplanetary Kuiper belts have been detected around other stars and can be extremely massive and extended, but an Oort Cloud analogue has not been observed; current observations show giant rings of icy material around some systems, indicating that detecting distant cometary reservoirs around others is challenging but feasible with future telescopes.
[Q&A+] How Hot Are Black Holes?
Q: And in Q&A+, can small moon impacts be a threat to Earth?
The host explains that while impacts can happen, large-scale debris from moon impacts could threaten satellites and cause significant meteor activity, but overall scenarios involving disastrous moon impacts remain highly unlikely; they discuss risk assessment and the need to monitor near-Earth objects as ongoing planetary defense, with emphasis on understanding probability and consequences rather than sensational scenarios.
[Q&A+] What Should We Do With Hubble?
Q: Leafbinder, if moon tickets were only $500, would you go see it?
The host would eagerly take a $500 ticket to the Moon or in-space experiences if the safety and logistics were reasonable, indicating strong personal interest in space travel even at relatively low price points.
[Q&A+] What Should We Do With Hubble?
Q: Silo87, is the cost to send a repair update mission for Hubble greater than a new Hubble-sized telescope?
The discussion suggests servicing could cost around a billion dollars, which is still less than building a brand-new Hubble-class telescope for several billion dollars, but current budget realities and lack of shuttle capability complicate pursuing either option.
[Q&A+] What Should We Do With Hubble?
Q: Jake Gadjoff, what are the main causes for making an orbiting object in the solar system tidally locked versus spinning?
Tidally locked states arise because gravitational torques between a planet and its satellite gradually synchronize the rotation with the orbital period, especially when the bodies are close and one is irregular, leading to a slow down until the two rotate in concert; this is seen in the Moon–Earth system and many Jovian moons, with long timescales that can eventually produce mutual locking.
