Q: Firstly, congratulations on the single. How does Free Your Mind reflect your shift into Marshmello's sonic space, and what was the approach to sketching ideas or capturing the beat?
The track centers on clarity and self-worth over external validation, with a philosophy of choosing inner peace over societal accolades; the rhythm and melodic choices were guided by a drummer's mindset, blending scatted ideas and real-time rhythm to shape the verses.
Tove Lo
Q: How did the collaboration with Stromae on Des Fleurs come about and what was the process to bring it to life?
It started from a long-standing admiration for Stromae, reaching out politely about collaborating; after I released Dirt Femme, he sent tracks to write to, and the Des Fleurs idea grew from a hypnotic piano bed and his vocal/humming textures, which I then built around in a long writing session in New Zealand, refining vocal chopups and stylistic choices to fit both our voices.
Tove Lo
Q: We are primarily a songwriting podcast. Wondering whether you might be able to share where your introduction to songwriting began or what sparked that interest?
I began in Sweden, attending a music high school where I was drawn to singing, journaling, and eventually songwriting; the spark came from wanting to express emotions and learn an instrument, which opened the door to writing words that could channel my inner experiences and feelings.
Jack Antonoff - Bleachers 2.0
Q: What strengths within songwriting have you honed over time, and is there a new goal you're aiming for?
I continually aim to get closer to a deeper truth in the song, recognizing that there is no fixed path and that the most important factor is listening to what the work feels like when I hear it back, rather than forcing a particular process.
Jack Antonoff - Bleachers 2.0
Q: Is there anything you do to acknowledge when new music comes out, a tradition around album releases?
Yes, I go back into the process and reflect on the journey, staying present with the moment while also looking ahead to live opportunities, arrangements, and the overall reception that feeds back into the ongoing work.
