After the tremendous success and Oscar comeback for Robert Altman with 2001’s Gosford Park, the idiosyncratic director delivered a more understated work for what would become his second-to-last film, 2003’s The Company. Set within Chicago’s Joffrey B... more
2022’s Amsterdam was a high profile box office dud from disgraced director David O. Russell with timely themes, a big budget, and a ton of stars. The film tells a (partly true) story about fascist maneuverings in America, with Christian Bale, John Da... more
Is the “buzzy literary adaptation to Oscar bonafide” pipeline kaput? This week, we’ve got a forgotten, pre-production-buzzy title on deck: 2012’s Being Flynn! Based on Nick Flynn’s memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, the film follows Paul Dan... more
After our Class of 2025 episode last week, we’re doing one of the most requested from the Class of 2023! After his COVID-stunted release (and beloved THOB title) The Nest, Sean Durkin’s next film would be the true and tragic story of the Von Erich wr... more

Too much natter and neither host seems to have done much in the way of research.
May very well be the most hilarious episode of your canon. I’ve never seen The Nutcracker and the Four Realms but intend to do so. The original ballet is important to me, and so is this podcast. Thank you!
I listened to this pod for quite sometime, never understanding on what authority either of them had on the topic, but when they said Halle Berry’s Oscar was merely a gift of affirmative action, I realized they are not people I want to support. I really love the concept of this show but they are severely limited in the types of movies they discuss and actors they know anything about. They know nothing about classic movies or ANYTHING about actors of color and their films. With the amount of arrog... more
I’ve been a loyal THOB listener for years. The in-depth and well informed examinations of the films and their respective roll outs is undeniable. The hosts however can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Opinions are subjective and everyone is entitled to their own but I’m sad to say that often the dialogue shared on the show turns pretentious and quite nasty when discussing certain films. Film Critics have a job like the rest of us but sadly the podcast does little to erase our image of Film Criti... more
I love the sheer amount of knowledge these two have regarding movies and the Oscars. Been a Gary for a few years now but I gotta say, as a non-young person, that Joe’s incessant dunking on “youth culture”/old man yells at cloud-ness is never fun to listen to and has put me off from finishing episodes because of how needlessly negative/out of touch it comes across. Chris is always able to divert the conversation back to what the podcast does best but it’s a shame that “young people” is the hill J... more
