UnHerd political editor Tom McTague and Cambridge professor Helen Thompson team up to investigate the history of today’s politics — and what it means for our future. Each week they will explore the great forces, ideas and events that led us to where we are, whether in Britain, the United States, Europe or beyond. It’s a politics podcast for those who want a deeper, historical understanding of the news, to understand what has really shaped our world and why. We hope you enjoy! Don’t forget to rate, like and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts — and, of course, to get in touch with all your questions and comments so we can respond in future episodes. more

These Times is an antidote to the recent personality-driven smash hit pods. It is super serious, but not overly high brow. Has great presenters who resist the need for personal ‘chit chat’. Tom McTague & Helen Thompson achieve a perfect balance of journalistic political insight and in-depth academic knowledge. Also, like all the good pods, episodes are perfectly timed for a dog walk or workout.
This is probably my favourite podcast. I always look forward to new episodes. A fabulous listen when walking, cycling or even nursing a (anti-social) pint. Tom and Helen are a fantastic duo.
of podcasts and I can think of none that give the history as clean and clear as this
This podcast is probably the best to fill the hole left by Talking Politics. For years I’ve been in awe at Helen’s ability to draw on a range of historical sources and find parallels and differences with the events of today. So far they seem to reached a brilliant blend of coverage of modern events and historical deep dives to give context to the stories of the day. Two extremely knowledgable and intelligent people having a chat about something relevant. Can’t recommend it highly enough to all. ... more
Content is great but could be much improved by a more dynamic and engaging tone - speech is too slow and monotonous at the moment compared to peers.
