  • Nope

I’ve tried this podcast twice now. Don’t know why—think I was tricked by the change of thumbnail/image. The conversations are terribly boring, waffly. Couldn’t find anything helpful or insightful.

  • Nourishing a writing community

As a writer based in Edinburgh, this podcast makes me feel like part of a wider writing community. The conversations between writers on this podcast - particularly the episode feat. Joelle Taylor, Jay Bernard, Anthony Capildeo & Gail McConnell - are so enriching and motivating, they’ve become part of my writing practice. Thank you for all you do!

  • What a find.

There are so many podcasts about books and writing, offering advice on different aspects of the trade. The Writing Life tackles the practicalities of getting those words down and in order and flowing and interesting and gripping ….. I could go on.

There are so many really good discussions with people (authors) who are actually doing it and sometimes making the mistakes that we do and explaining the pitfalls.

Well worth a listen to if you are a writer or want to be.

  • Wonderful podcast

I only discovered this podcast two weeks ago & am really blown away by it. Every episode is a gem. The hosts are thoughtful, questions penetrating & what an incredible array of guests! From those starting out to those well-established. This is a great resource for writers (and readers!) at any stage of their journey. I’m a writer recently moved to Norfolk so am extra grateful as it’s bringing more intellectual sparkle to the place.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Madness and Magic: Hannah Murray on her memoir The Make Believe
Q: You spent years, obviously, taking other people's dialogue, other people's stories and transforming them into a three-dimensional performance. Was it quite a challenge to pivot from that outside-in approach to an inside-out process of writing your own inner monologue?
She notes the fundamental differences between acting and writing, acknowledging the desire for her own voice earlier in her career and explaining how memoir became the form that allowed her to control voice, truth, and representation while still engaging with others' voices thoughtfully.
Madness and Magic: Hannah Murray on her memoir The Make Believe
Q: And how did that decision making happen? How did you decide where to begin and where to end?
Murray details choosing a two-year window (2016–2018) as the book's core arc, then building around that period to create a coherent, chronological narrative that centers on the central experience while including surrounding context and memory.
Madness and Magic: Hannah Murray on her memoir The Make Believe
Q: So did that experience have quite a lot of influence on the way that this book was written, or the way it kind of shaped in the end?
She explains how her MA in creative non-fiction and workshop feedback significantly shaped the book, guiding structural decisions, the five-part framework, and ultimately the decision to present a memoir rather than fiction.
Madness and Magic: Hannah Murray on her memoir The Make Believe
Q: So storytelling is kind of a really integral part of who you are. But have you always wanted to write? Has that always been a part of you from childhood onwards?
Yes, Murray describes a lifelong pull toward writing that began as a reader and a bookworm, evolving through adolescence as she explored diaries, short stories, and initial drafting, before shifting focus to acting and eventually to writing as a primary vocation.
Experimenting with narrative form: Ashley Hickson-Lovence on About to Fall Apart
Q: What practical advice would you give to writers considering a tight time-frame or a nonfiction-inspired project?
He emphasizes having a rough destination early, doing substantial research, and using backstory and flashbacks to build characterization without over-explaining through dialogue; he also advocates reading work aloud to test pacing and sound.
