  • Nope

I’ve tried this podcast twice now. Don’t know why—think I was tricked by the change of thumbnail/image. The conversations are terribly boring, waffly. Couldn’t find anything helpful or insightful.

  • Nourishing a writing community

As a writer based in Edinburgh, this podcast makes me feel like part of a wider writing community. The conversations between writers on this podcast - particularly the episode feat. Joelle Taylor, Jay Bernard, Anthony Capildeo & Gail McConnell - are so enriching and motivating, they’ve become part of my writing practice. Thank you for all you do!

  • What a find.

There are so many podcasts about books and writing, offering advice on different aspects of the trade. The Writing Life tackles the practicalities of getting those words down and in order and flowing and interesting and gripping ….. I could go on.

There are so many really good discussions with people (authors) who are actually doing it and sometimes making the mistakes that we do and explaining the pitfalls.

Well worth a listen to if you are a writer or want to be.

  • Wonderful podcast

I only discovered this podcast two weeks ago & am really blown away by it. Every episode is a gem. The hosts are thoughtful, questions penetrating & what an incredible array of guests! From those starting out to those well-established. This is a great resource for writers (and readers!) at any stage of their journey. I’m a writer recently moved to Norfolk so am extra grateful as it’s bringing more intellectual sparkle to the place.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Experimenting with narrative form: Ashley Hickson-Lovence on About to Fall Apart
Q: What practical advice would you give to writers considering a tight time-frame or a nonfiction-inspired project?
He emphasizes having a rough destination early, doing substantial research, and using backstory and flashbacks to build characterization without over-explaining through dialogue; he also advocates reading work aloud to test pacing and sound.
Experimenting with narrative form: Ashley Hickson-Lovence on About to Fall Apart
Q: How did you land upon a protagonist who is older than you, and what motivated that choice?
The discussion reveals that the protagonist's age and experience allow the exploration of grief, memory, and belonging in a way that mirrors real-life family dynamics the author has observed; the choice anchors themes of identity and intergenerational distance.
Stories of humanity & connection: Jenni Fagan on The Delusions
Q: What was the central question you were leaning into for The Delusions?
She aimed to explore delusion, accountability, and love, asking what it means to wake up and face oneself in a universe that feels silent and vast.
Stories of humanity & connection: Jenni Fagan on The Delusions
Q: First of all, how do you feel about that description of the book as a '1984 for the afterlife'?
Jenni thinks the comparison is not apt, but it acknowledges the book's ambitious scope while staying focused on individual lives within a grand, speculative framework.
Writing dystopian fiction: Matt Greene on The Definitions
Q: Could you give a brief overview of the premise and the situation that your characters find themselves in?
The Definitions follows amnesiac individuals in a rehabilitation clinic who are learning to reacquire their identities after a virus stripped them of their memories.
