  • Great Interview

Thank you for the interview with Azizi. He provided exactly the type of expert input we so rarely get here in the west, but that we need in order to have a better understanding of the history behind all of the conflicts that have occurred in that part of the world since the regime change of 1979 in Iran.

Keep doing what you do Richard and Yalda, and we will keep listening! Thanks again.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Robots on the frontline: Is Ukraine now winning the war?
Q: How are Ukraine's drones shifting the balance across different war spheres?
Drones are central across the board, enabling long-range strikes, front-line reconnaissance, and even casualty evacuation, which collectively give Ukraine a decisive edge in multiple domains.
Who are the jihadists sweeping across Africa?
Q: What does this indicate for governance and regional stability in the Sahel?
The episode argues that weak governance, factional alliances, and external influence (France, Russia) have compounded insecurity; without honest governance and regional cooperation, jihadist networks can exploit fragmentation to expand further.
Who are the jihadists sweeping across Africa?
Q: Yousra, why did Junim feel it could attack now and what moment made this possible?
The UN peacekeeping pullout in November 2023 created a window, allowing Malian forces and allied jihadist groups to gain ground and coordinate across north-south axes, culminating in a calculated siege that signaled a strategic shift rather than a simple raid.
How does the war in Iran end?
Q: Has the regime in Iran fundamentally changed as a result of the conflict?
Azizi argues that Iran has changed but not undergone regime change; the clerics remain, but power dynamics are moving toward a more horizontal, consensus-based leadership with greater influence from the military-security elite.
How does the war in Iran end?
Q: What would a best-case endgame look like between Iran and the United States?
The guest says a formal deal could end the current war, but suggests that Iran and Israel would likely continue a shadow war via proxies and covert actions, preventing a full, decisive end to all hostilities.
