The Wilderness Years

Charlie & Sam

Sam is a 40 something who likes The Doors. He doesn't like the 80s. For him, there's a period of time - starting on 12th Sept 1975, and ending on 2nd May 1989 - that he dismisses outright, music-wise. Charlie is his mate who can't lie down and let this unhealthy view remain unchallenged. Sam and Charlie are old friends, old bandmates and new nemeses. If you can bear the pain, join our two music lo... more

All good things must come to an end, and average things too. So we conclude this part of the journey that saw young Sam explore otherwise unknown territory. We had highs, we had lows, we had tears, exasperation and partial enlightenment.

After Sam's dad suggested Dare! - The Human League's 1981 Magnum Opus - was the album he considered most accurately represented The Wilderness Years, it was only a matter of time before our hosts took it on. With a pretty much entirely synthesised ba... more

It’s a big one this week. We tackle one of Charlie’s favourite bands in Talk Talk (who Sam continues to refer to as Soft Cell much to Charlie’s chagrin) and their third album The Colour Of Spring, from 1986. There may well be tears before bedtime.

This week we travel to Dusseldorf to listen to one of the pioneers of West-Germany’s experimental krautrock scene. This was always going to be a reach for poor old Sam, but The Man Machine was a universal concern. The band’s seventh album was arguabl... more

As we've passed the halfway point of our journey through the wilderness years™️, it seems appropriate to tackle one of the big guns. Prince Rogers Nelson had his biggest commercial success with 1984's Purple Rain. Will Sam be able to get past its gra... more

Once we get over some shaky ground involving positive discrimination, this week’s chat covers some new ground, and whisper it, Sam actually makes some progress. Despite the two technological titans of 80s record production (the Fairlight & Linn drum)... more

On this episode of The Wilderness Years we discuss Iggy Pop's second album of 1977 and second recorded with David Bowie, the rollicking Lust For Life. We very nearly re-recorded this show as Sam was horribly hungover, plus the sound quality on his si... more

After the abject failure to change Sam's opinion of The Wilderness Years on last week's show with the 80s pop behemoth that is ABC's Lexicon Of Love, perhaps a subtler approach might see more success. So it is we go in this time with an indie-pop lan... more

I have lived listening to this. Great fun listening to both sides of the argument. Makes you want to go for a beer with both.

  • Love it!

This podcast is brilliant! Such a good format as you, along with Sam, have to do homework between episodes and its great to listen to albums in whole which is less common these days.

I’m lucky to know the hosts but if this is the first time you meet Charlie and Sam, you will be endeared by their long standing friendship and will enjoy the love they have for each other, all be it shrouded with banter and piss-taking!

  • Two old chums coming in your ears. A 5 star must!

Two musician muckers giving their opinions on albums, bands, eras, genres with no real care for facts or research. Love it! Great concept and great timing on this coming out. Agreeing with both on different points and catching myself disagreeing out loud on others has only reminded me how much I miss the simple afternoon pub debate. Thanks guys. 👊🏻

  • Lovely stuff...

I’ve known Sam Richards for many years. I know he is a man who loves playing golf, drinking red wine, wearing polo shirts and watching The Great British Bake Off.

It’s always amusing listening to him try and deny he doesn’t also secretly love Duran Duran.

  • No Jam, No Clash, No Dexys

Sam Richards is a self-proclaimed left-liberal. He abhors sexism. He abhors racism. He abhors this-ism and that-ism.

There’s one ism, however, that Richards propagates with irritating recurrence: era-ism.

Sam believes that the near decade and a half that passed from Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here to The Stones Roses’ eponymous debut album were music’s wilderness years – approximately 170 months in which Sam believes quality music lay dormant, awaiting Ian, John, Mani and Reni to hail its re... more

  • Music to my years!

What an excellent format The wilderness Years is. Charlie’s ‘John Peel’ to Sam’s ‘Alan Partridge’ 👌🏻😂 Whatever the outcome, music is the winner of this podcast (even if it was from 1975-1989). Top banter, a music education, and some much needed therapy for Sam. It’s brilliant - can’t wait for the next episode.

  • Music musings of the highest order.

The beauty of this show is that the central premise - that no good music was made for 14 years - seems initially absurd, but you can’t help finding yourself agreeing with both of the hosts at some point.

Sam and Charlie’s musical passion is infectious. This is like the best drunken debates but with added objectivity and actual facts (some are even true!).

  • The wilderness years left me in tears

What a show! Charlie and Sam cover some incredible music and the in jokes and laughs add so much character to the show. You don’t need to be into music to listen, but if you want to hear some hilarious introductions to things you may jot have heard, this is the place, it’s a must listen! 5 star rating from me! 😍

  • Well worth a listen!

Like sitting in your local, overhearing 2 guys reflecting about a period of time where one has deemed that the ‘music scene’ became a baron landscape - over a few cans of red stripe.

Absolutely influenced by personal feelings, all facts presented are probably incorrect and a hilarious, but poorly constructed critique of the 80’s...

Funny, chilled - looking forward to the next one!
