Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Satanic Screen: Beyond Horror Cinema | Nikolas Schreck
Q: Now that we talked about the devil all the time and all the different periods, what does the devil still represent today?
The guest explains that the devil still exists as a real being in his view, but in popular culture the name has largely become a flexible label for anything outside evangelical Christian norms; he emphasizes understanding the devil as an ethnographic, historical symbol that tests devotion and reflects ongoing societal concerns rather than a fixed archetype.
The Devil in Horror Cinema | Dr. Steve Haberman
Q: You mentioned The Seventh Victim and how it portrays Satanic worship among ordinary people; how did that shift in depiction influence later horror cinema?
The Seventh Victim showed that satanic influence could be present in everyday life, not just in ritual settings. This opened up a path for later films to explore the psychology of believers and the danger of 'banality of evil,' where seemingly normal people become involved in darker activities, which in turn influenced later horror to mix social settings with occult themes.
The Devil in Horror Cinema | Dr. Steve Haberman
Q: Now, Steve, why do you think Satanism holds such a lasting fascination in films and what drew you to explore these darker aspects of film history?
Satan, the Devil, and Lucifer have fascinated humanity since ancient times because early people sought explanations for natural phenomena and the mysteries of life and death; cinema later reframed these questions by showing how evil operates both as a supernatural force and as a human attribute, leading to enduring fascination and complex storytelling. My work explores how this dualism—supernatural imagery and human psychology—offers rich material for commentary and analysis, from The Seventh Victim to The Devil Rides Out.
