This is currently my favourite podcast to listen to. It takes topics that aren’t talked about enough and makes them relatable and much easier to understand. I really wish I’d been taught this sort of thing when I was younger. It’s actually made me interested in how I budget and manage my finances. Thanks girls!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

“I Want to Go Self-Employed — But I'm Terrified of Getting the Money Wrong” | The Vault Episode 119
Q: Should I keep the lifetime ISA for a house deposit or use cash savings for flexibility?
Balance risk and timing: if a house purchase is in the near-to-mid future, a cash ISA with access and a sinking fund may be safer; if the goal is longer-term, a stocks-and-shares ISA could be considered, but be mindful of penalties and market risk.
“I Want to Go Self-Employed — But I'm Terrified of Getting the Money Wrong” | The Vault Episode 119
Q: I want to go self-employed, but I'm terrified of getting the money wrong. Where do I start with tax and accounting?
Start by separating business and personal finances, open a dedicated business bank account, and set up basic accounting software to categorize transactions. Consider speaking to an accountant early to establish the right base (sole trader vs. limited company) and create a sinking fund for taxes.
“Should I Move Back to London If It Slows My Investing?” | The Vault Episode 111
Q: Should I move back to London, if it slows my investing?
The hosts advise modeling multiple scenarios: assess how a higher London salary could boost retirement contributions and house deposits, weigh the cost of living and potential investment growth, and consider living arrangements like flat-sharing to maintain saving momentum while balancing quality of life. They highlight using forward-looking calculations to bridge the gap between current affordability and long-term goals, and suggest keeping investments aligned with retirement timelines rather than chasing short-term gains.
"I'm Earning More Than Ever But I Have Nothing to Show for It" | The Vault Episode 116
Q: How can someone rein in lifestyle creep when income increases but spending scales up too?
Create a joint budget, identify fixed versus flexible expenses, run a money date to review past spending, and redirect any pay rises toward savings or investments instead of lifestyle upgrades.
“Should I Pay Off My High-Interest Loan First — Or Save Instead?” | The Vault Episode 105
Q: If I wanted to contribute an additional 100 pounds a month to that loan, would it make more sense to pay that as an extra payment each month or place it into a high interest savings account?
It is better to pay off the loan directly as it provides psychological benefits and helps you stay focused on your financial goals.
