  • A really insightful listen

Great podcast. So pleased that you covered the horrendous post office scandal, especially the point about the fact that this scandal points to much broader significant failures in the criminal justice system. Disappointed that there was no mention of the potentially significantly disproportionate charging, prosecution and sentencing outcomes for minority ethnic post masters. This must be examined more closely.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep58: CourtWatch 2.0 - making sense of the magistrates' court
Q: Where did you see the biggest barriers to understanding during hearings?
Barriers included complex legal language, the physical setup that limits defendant participation, and occasions where staff or judges spoke to others in ways that left defendants feeling unheard.
Ep58: CourtWatch 2.0 - making sense of the magistrates' court
Q: So Penelope, what was the point of having a mass court observation project?
The point was to illuminate what goes on in magistrates' courts, which are rarely filmed or journalistically covered, and to identify patterns that affect fairness and access to justice.
Ep54: Rehabilitation in prison - reality or rhetoric?
Q: If you were Lord Chancellor, Minister of Justice, what one thing would you do to support prisoners to stop offending on release?
Revisit how interventions for people with mental health issues are delivered, ensuring they don't wait until a crime is committed.
Ep51: Punished for surviving? Women in the prison system
Q: Is the term 'vulnerable' helpful in describing women in prison?
Many women feel the term 'vulnerable' is a deficit label that dehumanizes them, suggesting a lack of agency. It's essential to recognize their strengths instead.
Ep51: Punished for surviving? Women in the prison system
Q: How should the criminal justice system respond to women differently and appropriately?
The sustainable funding of women's centers that address women's unique needs should be a priority, along with understanding that many women offend out of survival or familial responsibilities.
