  • Enjoyable podcast on Tramping (hiking) in NZ

Really well put together show about tramping in New Zealand. Candid interviews with all the big names. Just the right length.

The short and punchy episodes covering tracks and Jonty’s experiences are all a good addition.

Thank you for the special episode on Shaun Barnett. From where I am sitting I can see a couple of his books on my book shelf. Taken too early - should have been walking in the backcountry for many more years.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Eugenie Sage - Conservation, Controversy, and Melting Jerseys
Q: Looking back on your career as an MP, what are some of the biggest wins you're proud of, and how did public mobilization contribute to those outcomes?
Big wins came from broad coalitions—stopping the Timberlands Beach Scheme, ending logging on Crown lands, and securing protections like High Country Conservation Parks—achieved through sustained public pressure, media attention, and advocacy that pressured policymakers to act in the public interest.
Eugenie Sage - Conservation, Controversy, and Melting Jerseys
Q: How did conservation politics change during your time working with Helen Clark, and what were the key shifts in policy and collaboration?
The department was being reformed into a more joined-up system, with earlier teething issues as agencies began coordinating; there was a shift toward protecting places rather than only focusing on indigenous biodiversity, plus growing recognition of the need to balance protection with sustainable use, especially in marine contexts.
Corina Jordan - Hunting, Conservation, and Coexistence
Q: What are the main challenges in modernizing conservation frameworks and how close are you to legislative changes?
The main challenges include aligning the new Herds of Special Interest tool with existing policies, garnering broad support for valuing introduced species, and pushing through amendments to the Game Animal Council Act and a new Fish & Game Act within the current government term.
Corina Jordan - Hunting, Conservation, and Coexistence
Q: Could you explain the roles of the Game Animal Council and Fish & Game New Zealand and how they interact?
The Game Animal Council advises the minister on game animal management and represents hunters' voices, working with DOC and hunter-led foundations, while Fish & Game manages sports fish, game birds, and habitats, funded by license holders; both aim to balance conservation with hunter activities.
Craig Potton - Photography, Happiness, and Rock Bivvies
Q: What are your earliest memories of being outdoors?
I recall being focused on outdoor experiences through childhood—surfing, collecting shells and rocks, and gradually moving into overnight tramps with friends. Memory is slippery, so I rely on my mother and the abundance of early adventures that drew me into wilderness life and photography.
