  • Solid.

I don’t agree with everything entirely (as when everything), but it’s nice to different sides of the spectrum finding common ground. Pick and choose your episodes as both sides can go from 0 to 100 in a short space which gets rather intense for the listener. As a final note, just because someone opposes mass immigration doesn’t mean they don’t want immigrants - quality of quantity.

  • Good as far as it goes

In the roundup for 2025, the panel and moderator did not include the setbacks to pay equity in 2025. I wonder why that was?

  • Podcast find for 2025!

Really enjoy listening to this podcast with two of AotearoaNZ’s knowledgeable former politicians who know what they’re talking about. Helps me to better understand the issues and also gives me an insight into politics of the past. I look forward to each episode. 10/10!

  • Refreshing

Hearing two politicians (albeit ex) engage in sensible, non-positional discussion on critical issues is refreshing and a welcome change to the usual attacking and posturing. As a longtime TRIP fan, applaud this addition to my weekly podcast listening. Keep it up!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Question Time: Live from Booktown (Bonus)
Q: What reforms could help reduce populism and improve democracy?
Investing in civic education, exploring citizen assemblies, promoting participatory mechanisms, and ensuring transparency in party funding can help strengthen democratic legitimacy and reduce the appeal of simplistic populist narratives.
Question Time: Live from Booktown (Bonus)
Q: Is a grand coalition desirable in New Zealand, or should there be a strong two-party dynamic?
A grand coalition could risk sidelining broader public representation and create a vacuum in the opposition; a strong two-party system with robust, transparent governance and bipartisanship on key issues is better for continuity and accountability.
Question Time: Live from Booktown (Bonus)
Q: What are your thoughts on Hungary and its populist trend?
Hungary is a complicated case where a strong nationalist leadership was able to drive political change, but ultimately faced pushback and defeat in recent elections; this suggests that populism can be curbed with persistent democratic engagement, media scrutiny, and effective governance, even if the initial gains seem durable.
Cabinet Demotions, Grand Coalitions and Rocket Science
Q: How is Chris Bishop's new role viewed in terms of a demotion and what might Luxon's motivations be?
The panel suggests the reshuffle is a shift that frees Bishop for different duties, including the attorney general role, which is pivotal to governance, and that some interpret it as strategic posturing by Luxon rather than a punitive demotion.
