  • A Cornucopia of Folklore and Stories

Eleanor and Martin’s delight and passion for all things folklorish, legendary, magical, and esoteric are infectious, as are their laughter and charm.

This podcast delivers more content each week than any other I know - presenting a wide variety research on myths, creatures, spells, crafts, historical figures, music, and much more. As well beautifully written and read original stories inspired by the material.

  • If you are just discovering this fabulous podcast, please give yourself time to listen thru back catalogs and travel through the landscapes and the storytelling.

I love the storytelling, the bits of history and their shared ability to create community and connections with the historic counties of England and Wales (so far as I am writing) and more to come. And then there are the extras - the interviews with other story tellers, historians, people who truly love the land they are in.

    Gronk!

  • Highly recommend the Three Ravens Podcast for anyone who writes using folktales

After receiving the book, the three Ravens podcast stood out to me due to its range of folklore from different counties and the history behind them. I also enjoyed how Eleanor and Martin delivered a humorous, entertaining and educational performance while on the podcast; discussing a variety of topics along with allowing their listeners to get involved. Examples of this include card competitions and people sharing their spooky stories to be read out on the podcast.

  • Superlative

I came for the folklore and stayed for the expressive readings. It was an Autumn evening, wondering the local woods, that I came across an impenatrable wall of bracken. Finding no way round,I tried to double back and realised I had taken several wrong turns and was hopelessly lost as the forest started to darken. Searching my pockets, I was relieved to find that not only had I remembered to pack a torch, a packet of 'original' toffees and half a pheasant, but that I had also downloaded several p... more

  • Just perfect

Having discovered this podcast in mid 2025 I have just about caught up working my way through the back catalogue. What can I say? It’s just perfect. A mixture of spooky, entertaining and historical and just generally well written and researched. Suits my niche collections of interests to a tea!!! Thank you Martin and Eleanor

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Local Legends #64: Dr Simon Young
Q: If people wanted to learn more about fairies, take part in a fairy census maybe, or have a hankering to explore your work on Boggarts, Folklore or Victorian Urban Legends, where would you recommend they look?
Simon points to the Fairy Investigation Society as a starting point, the Fairy Census online survey, Simon's British Mythology Substack, and his Boggit and Banshee podcast as ongoing resources.
Local Legends #64: Dr Simon Young
Q: What's one thing about fairies, a piece of law, perhaps a belief or misconception, or something you just think is important to do with a fairy or fairy story that you would like people to take away from our conversation?
A key takeaway is that traditional fairies historically did not have wings; Wings emerged later in cultural imagination, while the oldest fairy encounters relied on landscape, place, and social interaction with humans, showcasing the evolving nature of belief.
Local Legends #64: Dr Simon Young
Q: The first of which is, if someone was planning to visit somewhere, Faye and Fun, anywhere in the world, where would you recommend they go?
Simon recommends visiting places traditionally associated with fairies, such as sites with a historic fairy reputation, including a Welsh example near Aberystwyth where an old field is linked to fairy experiences, guided by archival maps and local tradition.
LIVE @ Farnham Literary Festival 2026!
Q: How much of Blanche and Neville's tale is grounded in historical fact?
The hosts suggest that while Blanche Heriot, Neville Audley, and Herrick Avendean were likely real people at the end of the Wars of the Roses, the specific events around their romance intersect with political history and folkloric embellishment. The core romance appears credible, but the dramatic rescue, the bell-clanging scene, and the consecration of a king's pardon are presented as a blend of fact and lore, shaped by later retellings and cultural storytelling.
"The Black Thief and Knight of the Glen" and "Brother and Sister"
Q: Why did you pair these two stories together in this episode?
We paired them to create a balanced, substantial listen that mirrors each other in structure—one longer, one shorter—while allowing for discussion of shared themes like family, cunning, and transformation, and to provide a broad cross-cultural perspective on Lang's fairy-tale collections.
