  • The Three Ravens Podcast: Hermes Trismajestis

Wow! I am in such awe of your research on all these episodes, but the way you cut through the tangle of lore and rubbish that clouds this particular topic and at the same time managing to bring in the wide sweep of philosophical thought and occult practice relative to the development of ancient Christianity and the endeavours of the Renaissance is just jaw dropping. Bravo!

Am slowly catching up on back issues since Candlemas when I emerged blinking from the 15 Century.

  • Delightful

Delightful podcast! The regional history and folklore are very well researched, and the storytelling is beautiful and immersive. I also greatly appreciate their commitment to avoid using AI. Generative AI is a scourge on the environment and the arts. This decision has made one of my favourite podcasts even better.

  • I started listening to hear the tales spoken around about the time that The Three Ravens Folk Tales book was launched. Really enjoyed those, and found that there was so much more to this podcast. I loved the original fiction episode-a-day serials Dog Days and Vasilisa The Brave. There is also a lot of education here, with discussions of the history, sources, influences: I'm enjoying it all.

  • GigaSmash!

Bestiary #20 Wargs and Werewolves. I listened to it twice just for their interpretation of The Epic of Gilgamesh. They were both in rare form with all the cheeky, witty banter. I’ve never heard it described quite like that but I Love it! Looking forward to what you bring to the holiday season! Cheers!

  • Not very good

Romney marsh episode was not very accurate! the Romney marsh doesn’t only have just over 2000 people live on it, it’s more like 15,000 you didn’t even visit the 3 main towns of Romney marsh Lydd, New Romney, Dymchurch. Thats just a couple of mistakes made but there is so many in the episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

LIVE @ Farnham Literary Festival 2026!
Q: How much of Blanche and Neville's tale is grounded in historical fact?
The hosts suggest that while Blanche Heriot, Neville Audley, and Herrick Avendean were likely real people at the end of the Wars of the Roses, the specific events around their romance intersect with political history and folkloric embellishment. The core romance appears credible, but the dramatic rescue, the bell-clanging scene, and the consecration of a king's pardon are presented as a blend of fact and lore, shaped by later retellings and cultural storytelling.
"The Black Thief and Knight of the Glen" and "Brother and Sister"
Q: Why did you pair these two stories together in this episode?
We paired them to create a balanced, substantial listen that mirrors each other in structure—one longer, one shorter—while allowing for discussion of shared themes like family, cunning, and transformation, and to provide a broad cross-cultural perspective on Lang's fairy-tale collections.
Local Legends #59: Francesca Simon MBE
Q: What was growing up like for you and what first inspired you to tell stories?
Francesca describes a childhood spent near beaches and in households steeped in writing, with a lifelong passion for myths, legends, and folk tales; these early influences fed her later work across genres and forms.
Local Legends #61: Dr Delyth Badder
Q: From your perspective, what are your three favourite folktales or ghost stories from Wales, and why do you like them?
My favorites include a Pembrokeshire-origin ghost from 1831 depicted in Cambrian Superstitions for its lyrical, longing tone; a tale in Aston Sionedd featuring Arraun, the king of Annwn, which blends landscape with myth; and the Avanc, a long-standing Welsh monster whose evolving depictions—from cave-dwelling to water-dwelling forms—reveal how folklore travels and mutates over centuries. Each story highlights Wales' unique blend of place, language, and belief, and shows how regional texts keep these legends alive in modern retellings.
Local Legends #58: Will Millard
Q: What makes Merionethshire unique as a county, historically and in folklore?
He describes Merionethshire as a distinct maritime, sparsely populated county with dramatic landscapes, strong Welsh language presence, and a wealth of mine-related folklore, including tales of giants and underwater lakes that symbolize cultural memory and resilience.
