  • The Two Sides of Jacques Ellul’s Work - Bravo!

I immensely enjoyed this conversation and regret not listening to it ahead of taking a graduate course on Principalities and Powers wherein Ellul’s “The Presence of the Kingdom” was part of the curriculum. This conversation contextualized Ellul’s prolific writings for me and would have helped me better appreciate Ellul’s emphases in that book! Thanks for providing such engaging and interesting content!

  • Scholarship for the Rest of Us

I am a minister in a local church who has been out of academia for a while now. My old mentors told me that good pastors say curious and are always learning, but it has been a struggle to keep up with good scholarship. The Theology Mill podcast bridges this gap very well for people like me, and some of my best book purchases have been inspired by these episodes! Highly recommended!

  • Brilliant, thought-provoking show

Just listened to the Laurie M Johnson episode. Well put together and easy to listen to, but content of substance. Will need to read the transcript or listen again. Looking forward to upcoming episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pilgrimage Between the Sacred and the Secular — with Colby Dickinson
Q: What is pilgrimage, and what does it mean for you to be a pilgrim and to go on a pilgrimage?
He explains pilgrimage as both a goal-oriented and a process-oriented experience, where the journey itself—its challenges, solitude, and encounters—transforms the person more than the destination itself.
Pilgrimage Between the Sacred and the Secular — with Colby Dickinson
Q: So I wonder if you would say something about that tension, more of that kind of dialectic between sacred and secular and maybe in your work in general, what does that tension sort of mean in your own life?
He describes how his life mirrors the book's tension: he navigates being devoutly Catholic while feeling comfortable labeling himself atheist at times, embodying a cross-disciplinary, liminal stance that enriches both personal faith and intellectual inquiry.
Melissa Moschella / The New Natural Law
Q: As we get our conversation started, could you just share with our listeners maybe a bit about yourself and what you do for work?
I work at the University of Notre Dame in the McGrath Institute, focusing on moral, political, and legal philosophy with an emphasis on natural law and its bioethical applications, including parental rights and family life.
Eric Reitan / Limited Salvation and the Problem of Heavenly Grief
Q: What are the main premises behind the argument from heavenly grief, and why do they pose a problem for some theological configurations?
The four premises are love (the blessed will love the lost), awareness (they know some are lost), fitting grief (grief is a morally appropriate response), and incompatibility (enduring grief cannot coexist with perfect happiness); together they create the tension that some propose resolving by universalism or other adjustments.
Eric Reitan / Limited Salvation and the Problem of Heavenly Grief
Q: Could you lay out, briefly, what you mean by perfect blessedness and eternal damnation, and how these concepts interact in your framework?
Perfect blessedness is a state of saved beings in heaven characterized by moral sanctification, perfect joy, and loving community; eternal damnation is a state of horror where beings are excluded from that community, either as a punishment or as annihilation, depending on the view.
