  • Thanks

I’m currently in my senior year of undergrad, just started a structural engineering internship and seeing all the work people are doing has been very overwhelming. Listening to this podcast has really helped me stay positive and realize that I don’t have to know everything. There’s some really great information in these episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 115 - The Gap That Saves Buildings
Q: What does it look like to come in after a building has been built, and you're reskinning the building? What other considerations are there?
The guests discuss re-skinning, including evaluating how much building movement will occur, potential lateral calcs for existing structures, and the need to adjust joints and connections to maintain behavior under new facade systems, with attention to life-safety and continuity of operation.
Episode 115 - The Gap That Saves Buildings
Q: Or people that maybe they are that engineer of record that delegates everything. What would you say makes up a facade?
Jeff explains that facade involves the exterior material system (brick, stone, metal panels, rain screen) and its attachment to a supporting non-structural skin, emphasizing that joints and movement must be considered at the panel level as well as the building movement, with the engineer of record integrating the facade design to ensure proper load transfer and performance.
Episode 113 - How Software Leaders See the Future of Structural Engineering
Q: How do you train sales engineers to avoid hard selling and instead communicate effectively with engineers?
The approach relies on listening, understanding customer problems, and sharing how the tool fits into solving real engineering challenges, using engineers as the primary relatable bridge to clients.
Episode 113 - How Software Leaders See the Future of Structural Engineering
Q: What does IDEA StatiCa see as the biggest market opportunity in the US today?
The company is aiming to raise awareness among structural engineers and leverage direct sales with engineers-turned-salespeople to build trust and share a clearer path to a more reliable design process.
Episode 112 – Good Connections Make Great Structures
Q: How did Johan and Andrea transition from traditional engineering to working with software like IDEA StatiCa?
Both described moving from hands-on design and fabrication roles to software-focused product engineering, driven by the value of faster iteration, better visualization of connections, and the ability to optimize detailing for fabrication.
