It's back now, but the format has changed slightly, so that only excerpts of the story being discussed are narrated in the episode. It's still a good way to get insight into the literary culture of Ireland, but it takes away the fun of enjoying the art itself. To me, it's just a lot less enjoyable to hear about the story without hearing the whole sto... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

June Caldwell
Q: What role does climate justice play in your work?
Climate justice matters because privilege and power influence who bears the burden of climate impacts; I try to foreground those stakes in the personal and familial layers of the narrative.
June Caldwell
Q: How did editing influence the final shape of the story?
My editor pushed me to go wilder at the three-quarters point, helping intensify the haunting and bring the climate arc into sharper relief, while trimming to maintain momentum.
June Caldwell
Q: What drew you to pair the Night of the Big Wind with a contemporary personal tempest in your story?
I wanted to fuse a historical, collective trauma with a private, intimate storm to show how the past lives in the present and how climate pressures amplify personal dynamics across generations.
Odrán Waldron
Q: Can I ask, not that you probably didn't need to, we all read so much about this stuff anyway, but did you read much about this kind of work or the gig economy or hear anecdotes?
I was probably thinking about the gig economy and the precariousness surrounding it during the protests about workers' rights.
Odrán Waldron
Q: When you write something, when you're writing a story, do you ever read it aloud to yourself?
Yes, I do. It helps catch mistakes.
