Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#40 - Living With Lymes & Changing Lives | Leonie Shanahan
Q: What were the biggest challenges with getting schools on board, and how did you navigate top-down versus grassroots support?
Leonie notes that top-down support made implementations easier, while grounds staff and inconsistent buy-in from some teachers could hinder progress. Her approach emphasized empowering schools to take ownership and encouraging leadership from school communities.
#40 - Living With Lymes & Changing Lives | Leonie Shanahan
Q: What were the crucial factors that helped the program become successful in those early days?
Ownership by students, making the garden fun, and using a journal to integrate learning across subjects were key. Community volunteers and a focus on no-dig soils and productive spaces created tangible results that schools could see and rally around.
#40 - Living With Lymes & Changing Lives | Leonie Shanahan
Q: Can you tell me about the journey of how quickly that spread started and what it was like in terms of approaching different schools for your school garden program?
Leonie explains that schools approached her rather than the other way around; early successes came from building on community demand, leveraging volunteers, and aligning the program with what teachers and parents already wanted, which helped spread the model across multiple campuses.
#35 - Why Weeds Are Completely Misunderstood | Kate Wall
Q: What practical steps can home gardeners take after flooding to recover soil and garden health?
Start by covering mud with mulch (preferably woodchip) to protect and rebuild soil, avoid digging the mud, add organic matter to form humus, consider rock minerals to improve structure, and plan water management to slow and direct infiltration for long-term resilience.
#35 - Why Weeds Are Completely Misunderstood | Kate Wall
Q: What is your perspective on weeds and their role in nature?
Weeds are not merely pests; they are colonizers that repair damaged environments and increase biodiversity. Their presence can indicate soil conditions and their management should focus on understanding the ecosystem services they provide rather than simply eradicating them.
