While I cannot say that everything on the podcast strikes a cord with me. I have over the years taken an enormous amount of good, sound advice on how to be a more conscientious gardener and allotment holder. And always look forward to the next episode.

  • Inspirational

Thank you for all the useful tipis for a first time gardener. You mentioned mildew…. What worked wonders on my courgettes was Marie Louise Kreuters onion and garlic tea. Just soak onion and garlic greens in water for 3 hours and then watered it down 1 to 10, water the roots and repeat for a few weeks. Worked wonders for me

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S6 Ep8: July - We answer your questions at BBC Gardeners' World Live! With August Beth - The Raymond Blanc Gardening School
Q: What is the best approach to combat bindweed without chemical sprays?
Start with cultivation and continual monitoring, smother with cardboard to deprive the roots of light and nutrients, and be vigilant for several months as the underground structure weakens; combine this with regular weeding to prevent regrowth and use physical barriers where possible.
S6 Ep8: July - We answer your questions at BBC Gardeners' World Live! With August Beth - The Raymond Blanc Gardening School
Q: The first question asks about a compost that is slimy and smelly. What should the gardener do to fix it?
The panel explains that there is typically too much green material and not enough brown; you should balance greens with browns (live materials with dead materials), consider hot or cold composting, and ensure proper aeration to activate beneficial microorganisms.
S6 Ep6: June - There's still time to sow this summer, and why we're calling for a glyphosate ban.
Q: First of all, can you just tell us, actually, what is glyphosate?
Glyphosate is a systemic herbicide that is taken up by the plant and travels to the roots, meaning it affects the entire weed. It has been widely used but raised concerns due to potential health risks and environmental impacts, prompting the campaign for a ban in certain public and domestic settings.
S6 Ep4: May - Chris's top tips for seed sowing and, your questions answered on starting a new garden, gooseberry bush dilemmas, and converting a garden for food growing
Q: Cathy asks about converting a school garden from ornamental to edible and concerns about soil from removed shrubs.
Toxins in common shrubs don't typically leach into soil to affect future plants; the soil should be fine for creating a veg garden, and plan can include relocating shrubs rather than discarding them if possible.
S6 Ep4: May - Chris's top tips for seed sowing and, your questions answered on starting a new garden, gooseberry bush dilemmas, and converting a garden for food growing
Q: Simon asks about gooseberry mildew and how to handle it; what should be done?
Prune for better airflow, remove crowded growth, consider variety resistance, and potentially replace susceptible varieties with more disease-resistant cultivars.
