  • Thursday Highlight!

Every Thursday, I get excited about another episode of Home Grown. Very informative but grounded in practical information (and a bit of humor), listening is a weekly highlight. Both speakers have a lovely podcast presence. I find a lot of the content applicable to the US, but my favorite thing is that the content isn’t just for people with estate gardens or large backyards. Added bonus is that it’s very “clean,” so I can listen with kids in the car.

  • My favourite but with one caveat!

Love the show, but disappointed from the use of plant research from tel aviv university, knowing there is an ongoing genocide of Palestinians with farmers having their fertile land, olive and fruit trees destroyed. Rather than legitimising institutions built on stolen land please amplify the efforts of Palestinians trying to innovatively grow food while being trapped in an open air prison! There are many examples to research. Thank you💚

  • No fuss conversation between two friends

I bloody love this podcast; two very down to earth people talking sense that I can understand without unnecessarily complicated big words. Who knew strawberries were asexual - I do now. They clearly have respect for each other and between them share a lot of information; I have only listened to two episode’s and I am on nil points from their quiz! Highly recommend 🌟

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S1 Ep 28: What are Heirloom Seeds and Why do they Matter?: With Lucy Hutchings and Kate Cotterill
Q: How do you source and test new varieties before selling them?
We work with a wide network of artisan growers, run trial gardens across the UK, and only sell varieties that perform well in UK climates, ensuring they're true-to-type open-pollinated seeds.
S1 Ep 28: What are Heirloom Seeds and Why do they Matter?: With Lucy Hutchings and Kate Cotterill
Q: So why should people grow heirloom or open-pollinated seeds instead of relying on hybrids?
Because heirlooms preserve genetic stability, flavor diversity and adaptability; they allow gardeners to save seeds and keep a living lineage of varieties that have developed for specific climates and culinary uses.
S1 EP 23: From Balcony Gardens to Edible Pond Plants: Growing Food on the 18th Floor, and so much more! with Jason Williams
Q: Shall we get into the episode?
They introduce Jason Williams and set the stage for a deep dive into balcony gardening, urban greening, and Jason's multi-hyphenate career. Williams frames his journey from hospitality to design to television, with emphasis on learning your space and adapting to microclimates.
S1 Ep11: The Home Grown Christmas Guide
Q: What is the answer to the trivia question presented earlier?
The answer is B, indicating that wrens can form communal winter roosts for warmth.
S1 Ep4: Your Questions Answered - Allotment sell offs, Book rivalries and Cats on your crops
Q: How do I protect my crops from cats?
Using raised beds and covering fresh soil can deter cats, while also utilizing cold frames and chicken wire can help keep them out of the vegetable garden.
