Thank you for such good information for a newbie seedaholic. I love learning how to read the plants, collect and pass on seeds. Just for the fun of it.

  • Fantastic show!

I love all the No-Till related podcasts, but this is my favorite! Dan’s “seed growing basics” series that he did within this podcast a while back is what got me interested in growing seed on a much larger scale. And when I learned that he was writing a book I was so excited. I read it in a day! He has the perfect balance of providing very clear, easy to understand direction on the technical skills of growing a seed crop, balanced by the experience of having done it himself! Prior to this, I was ... more

  • This show is my farmer-need dream come true

I was so excited to learn about this podcast by pure happenstance while scrolling on Instagram! What a perfect nerdy blend of topics, and the timing is perfect as I’m researching how to start growing for seed production as another source of farm income. Can’t wait for episode 2 😎

Ep. 63 Rewilding One Backyard at a Time – Mélanie Ouellette, Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library
Q: What advice would you give to someone starting a similar seed library project?
Take it one day at a time, trust that you'll get what you need when you need it, and focus on grassroots, people-led efforts. Build a network of volunteers and local coordinators, and don't be discouraged by the free model—you can still sustain impact through community support and strategic outreach.
Ep. 63 Rewilding One Backyard at a Time – Mélanie Ouellette, Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library
Q: Why is genetic diversity important in your seed collections?
Diversifying genetics helps the collection be resilient to climate change and environmental pressures, and prevents weakening of the overall pool by avoiding over-reliance on a single source. We mix seeds from different growers whenever possible to maintain a broad, robust gene pool.
Ep. 63 Rewilding One Backyard at a Time – Mélanie Ouellette, Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library
Q: How does the Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library actually operate and stay funded?
It runs on a pay-it-forward model: seeds and plants are given for free, donations support the operation, and volunteering covers the workload. The project emphasizes reciprocity and community stewardship, with a decentralized network of local coordinators and volunteers who harvest, pack, and distribute seeds at events and through mailings.
Ep. 63 Rewilding One Backyard at a Time – Mélanie Ouellette, Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library
Q: Can you tell us your seed story and how you got involved with seed saving?
I started from a place of community movement and Indigenous perspectives, aiming to rematriate seeds to communities. My drive came from seeing seeds as a tool for cultural and ecological resilience, plus a personal commitment to gardening and wildlife-friendly landscapes that can be shared with others.
Ep. 61 A Suitcase Full of Seeds - Charlie Watt, Homecoming Seeds
Q: What would you tell your younger seed growing self?
Just start and do it. Seed keeping can be simple in practice yet offer deep learning if you approach it with curiosity, letting go of the need to have everything perfect before you begin.
