  • Interesting interviews

This is a good podcast to understand the complex issues of SAF. Good guests from a range of companies. However, need to invest in professional mics as sometimes the sound quality is not great and it can be hard to tell what the guests are saying.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Green Finance Institute - The personal trainers for SAF project finance
Q: What makes SAF financing different from other renewables, and why are SAF accelerators needed?
The guest outlines SAF-specific challenges: high capex and opex, pilot-stage feedstock risk, and complex supply chains. He argues accelerators help quantify residual risks, develop market-ready risk transfer structures, and create bankable project configurations that banks and public finance institutions can support.
Green Finance Institute - The personal trainers for SAF project finance
Q: How did you end up in banking and later pivot toward climate finance?
Mahesh explains a long arc from starting in banking in Australia, moving to the UK for an energy-focused MBA, and gradually pivoting to climate finance roles in organisations like CDP and the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change before landing at the Green Finance Institute.
Jan Toscka, Zaffra: Realising the romantic potential of eSAF
Q: Do you have a favorite among the three pillars you mentioned (government support, renewable power, or an off-taker in a brownfield site)?
Jan says there isn't a single favorite; a stepping-stone approach makes sense with small first projects in Germany, expanding later as the portfolio matures and risk decreases.
Jan Toscka, Zaffra: Realising the romantic potential of eSAF
Q: So before we get into Zaffra and wider thoughts, do you just want to take us through your career up till now?
Jan outlines a long career starting at Shell after his master's, rising through sales, M&A, and eventually leading Shell Aviation, before moving to co-found Zaffra with Sasol and Topsoe, focusing on ESAF.
DG Fuels - Strategy at the heart of everything
Q: What has been the biggest challenge that you guys have been facing over the last two years?
Chris mentions resilience as a key challenge, dealing with funding uncertainties and keeping the engineering efforts on track.
