  • Interesting interviews

This is a good podcast to understand the complex issues of SAF. Good guests from a range of companies. However, need to invest in professional mics as sometimes the sound quality is not great and it can be hard to tell what the guests are saying.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kenneth Hill, BioCarbon Strategies: Deciphering SAF's Alphabetti Spaghetti
Q: Why is a diversified offtake stack important for SAF project finance?
A mix of offtake contracts from different sectors—freight and passenger airlines, and corporate demand (e.g., major buyers like Microsoft)—reduces counterparty risk and improves bankability, especially when combined with a robust voluntary carbon market and appropriate policy incentives.
Kenneth Hill, BioCarbon Strategies: Deciphering SAF's Alphabetti Spaghetti
Q: How does Canada's policy landscape compare to the US, and what major changes are on the horizon in CFR amendments?
Canada is tightening and extending its Clean Fuels Regulations, with SAF expected to be included and possibly a mandate or strong incentives (e.g., 40 cents per liter). They're also leveraging investment tax credits and the Canada Growth Fund to finance SAF. The goal is to streamline permitting across provinces to accelerate deployment.
Kenneth Hill, BioCarbon Strategies: Deciphering SAF's Alphabetti Spaghetti
Q: What is the current state of SAF policy in the US, and how might the SAF Act affect the market going into the midterms?
The SAF Act has bipartisan support and, if enacted, would restore and extend the SAF bonus credit, potentially retroactive to late last year. The real impact hinges on timely passage and how it is integrated with other Farm Bill provisions and tax incentives; it could provide much-needed certainty and stabilize project economics.
Green Finance Institute - The personal trainers for SAF project finance
Q: What makes SAF financing different from other renewables, and why are SAF accelerators needed?
The guest outlines SAF-specific challenges: high capex and opex, pilot-stage feedstock risk, and complex supply chains. He argues accelerators help quantify residual risks, develop market-ready risk transfer structures, and create bankable project configurations that banks and public finance institutions can support.
Green Finance Institute - The personal trainers for SAF project finance
Q: How did you end up in banking and later pivot toward climate finance?
Mahesh explains a long arc from starting in banking in Australia, moving to the UK for an energy-focused MBA, and gradually pivoting to climate finance roles in organisations like CDP and the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change before landing at the Green Finance Institute.
