  • Insightful

I always enjoy listening to Cleaning Up, where Michael Liebreich - with his extensive background in both engineering and finance - asks tough and insightful questions of his guests. I noticed this again this week in his interview of Ben van Beurden, former CEO of Shell.

Cleaning Up brings a cutting edge view of the energy transition, both in terms of what’s driving it and what is blocking it.

The €65 Billion Plan to Modernise Germany’s Grids | Ep233: Tim Meyerjürgens
Q: What is the time frame in reality between those two events?
It has improved very much. So until three, four years ago, we were an average 10 to 12 years. With the last government under Robert Habeck, there were a lot of acceleration measures also supported by the European Commission with an emergency regulation because of the war in the Ukraine and the energy crisis. That brought down the realization times to five to eight years.
The €65 Billion Plan to Modernise Germany’s Grids | Ep233: Tim Meyerjürgens
Q: If I come back to the example that I mentioned before, Garnet Kiesingang-Tulfel, this was one of the very first lines that we built for the energy transition. How long does it take from the moment where you say, do you know what, we just need to build a new line, or we need to create a new capacity for, to connect up, to create new grid connections?
This took 20 years, 20 years and 17 of those were permitting and licensing.
The US Just Sank Shipping's Big Plan for Decarbonization, What Now? | Ep229: Tristan Smith
Q: What was on the table at the IMO meeting this week?
The policy package included a mandate for reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of energy used by ships by 65%.
The US Just Sank Shipping's Big Plan for Decarbonization, What Now? | Ep229: Tristan Smith
Q: Could you tell us a little bit about what turned you on to the climate and when that happened?
Tristan Smith explained that his interest shifted around 2010 when he was looking for engineering solutions beyond military applications.
The £60 Billion Plan To Rewire Britain | Ep227: John Pettigrew
Q: What has been the impact of data centers on National Grid's infrastructure demands?
Pettigrew noted that there has been a significant increase in demand from data centers, necessitating rapid network expansions to accommodate their high energy needs.
