  • Persian Gulf

The presenter’s choice of naming the Persian Gulf using alternative terms reflects a lack of knowledge and awareness. This fundamental error undermines the credibility of the podcast and suggests a shallow understanding of the subject. It makes the overall discussion feel poorly informed and lacking in depth.

  • Critical industry insight into the energy transition

As a long-time listener to this podcast (and many others) on the energy transition, I particularly appreciate the straight talking investor perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing the sector. In a space full of well intentioned but uncritical advocates for change, I appreciate Gerard and Laurent’s willingness both to stress the fundamental opportunity as well as call out the worst of the BS that misalign capital allocation and harm progress.

Geopolitics will continue to shape energy dependencies; the need is for a smart, selective approach to domestic capability while recognizing the global nature of some supply chains.
241. The Great Oxford Debate: “Energy and Aristotle" - Aug26
Q: What should industrial policy look like in energy?
Industrial policy should be targeted and strategic, supporting critical domestic capabilities (like battery cells and HVDC) while allowing imports where commoditized parts are concerned, rather than a blanket protectionist approach.
241. The Great Oxford Debate: “Energy and Aristotle" - Aug26
Q: Are we actually in an energy transition?
The hosts and guest agree that while renewables growth and electrification are uneven globally, the overall energy system is undergoing a transition with sectoral differences, implying that the transition is real though not uniform.
