  • Critical industry insight into the energy transition

As a long-time listener to this podcast (and many others) on the energy transition, I particularly appreciate the straight talking investor perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing the sector. In a space full of well intentioned but uncritical advocates for change, I appreciate Gerard and Laurent’s willingness both to stress the fundamental opportunity as well as call out the worst of the BS that misalign capital allocation and harm progress.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

221. LNG – Hormuz – “Apocalypse Now” - Mar26
Q: What happens in the five-year horizon if Qatar remains offline, and what shifts could we expect in LNG demand and supply?
If Qatar remains offline, LNG supply would have to be replaced by higher LNG production from other regions, which could spur more LNG projects and new FIDs, but demand growth may remain weak, especially in Asia and parts of Europe. This could lead to stronger incentives for renewables and electrification, while keeping LNG prices under pressure longer term unless Qatar or other major suppliers return to balance the market.
221. LNG – Hormuz – “Apocalypse Now” - Mar26
Q: Can you explain the pricing mechanism around hubs and the impact of having LNG regions on exporters and importers?
The pricing framework is built on three main spot benchmarks—Henry Hub for North America, TTF for Europe, and JKM for Asia. These benchmarks influence how LNG cargoes are priced either on a delivered or FOB basis, depending on whether you net out transportation costs and liquefaction, with market participants often pricing to the closest regional benchmark while oil-indexed contracts still exist but are less dominant.
220. Deal Trends for M&A and Energy Financing - Mar26
Q: Natasha, can we dig into the financing there?
She discusses country‑by‑country differences, the move from standalone solar to hold‑co financing, the role of tolling and contracted revenues, and the emerging importance of cross‑collateralization for portfolio financing.
220. Deal Trends for M&A and Energy Financing - Mar26
Q: Now, Natasha, maybe let's dig into each of them because they're really, really interesting. Let's start with the battery energy storage area.
Natasha outlines how BES has evolved from a niche market to a central part of energy transition strategies, emphasizing cross‑jurisdiction financing, co‑location with other assets, and the need for sophisticated structuring to manage merchant risk and revenue diversity.
217. Lithium, Copper, Silver and other metals go ballistic - Feb26
Q: What does the recent increase in lithium prices mean for the battery industry?
It could lead to volatility in raw material prices, impacting the cost of batteries and potentially affect consumer demand.
