  • Some nuggets but

So there are a few good nuggets here but I find the shows are getting longer and have too many academics discussing too much theory. Would prefer a more practical approach.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Making & Keeping Friends…in Retirement – Janice McCabe
Q: So we may think that our ability to make friends comes from our personality and social skills. Your research highlights something else. Why do structural factors really matter?
They matter a lot because they can make making friends either easier or harder, and we may not realize it. So people blame themselves, they feel like they're doing everything right, and yet they may not be successful in making friends because the people that they're encountering may not be open to it.
Love & Happiness…in Retirement – Sonja Lyubomirsky
Q: What advice would you give to someone planning retirement to apply these lessons from your work?
Focus on building connection, contribution, and personal growth in retirement, practice vulnerable and authentic communication, and engage in activities that promote meaning and social bonds rather than chasing conventional markers of success.
Love & Happiness…in Retirement – Sonja Lyubomirsky
Q: So let's start with the backstory. Tell us about how you and your co-author came to collaborate on this new book.
Harry Reis and I began collaborating about seven years ago after recognizing that the key to happiness is feeling connected and loved, a realization that emerged from our research on happiness interventions and relationships.
What Can Make or Break Your Retirement – Rod Yancy
Q: If you had a checklist for readiness to retire non-financially, what would be on it?
Focus on controllable elements like planning and self-knowledge, maintain a holistic view across health, community, finances, and legacy, and set tangible aspirations or hobbies to guide the transition.
What Can Make or Break Your Retirement – Rod Yancy
Q: What's the most counterintuitive insight from your survey that surprised you personally?
The realization that emotional health and mindset matter as much, if not more, than financial preparation in determining retirement satisfaction, as people often overlook the non-financial factors that shape daily well-being.
