Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Goes Global
Q: Can you share a notable example of IPT's impact outside the United States?
A landmark trial in Uganda showed IPT could be effectively implemented in low-resource environments, followed by widespread training and subsequent open dissemination, which was later independently verified by major outlets like the New York Times.
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Goes Global
Q: How did IPT spread from the US to global contexts without losing its core principles?
Through a collaborative, open process where practitioners in diverse settings adapted the approach to local contexts but were careful to maintain the fundamental link between symptoms and life situations, with open-access resources and international societies supporting consistent training and quality.
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Goes Global
Q: What makes IPT have staying power across cultures and time?
IPT is based on a simple, human-centered premise that distress is connected to current life circumstances, and it focuses on concrete areas like grief, disputes, transitions, and loneliness that are common across many cultures, making it broadly adaptable while remaining evidence-based.
Held Together: Weaving Women's Stories of Motherhood, Loss, and Finding Each Other
Q: How did you handle turning personal interviews into polished, readable stories while preserving each speaker's voice?
I treated each contributor as a collaborator, conducting lengthy interviews, then transcribing and iterating with them to capture their voice authentically. I used the person's own language, added scene-setting and narrative arc, and allowed the stories to evolve over years, ensuring the final chapters read like fiction while staying true to real experiences.
Held Together: Weaving Women's Stories of Motherhood, Loss, and Finding Each Other
Q: What does the title Held Together mean to you, and why is imperfection a central theme?
The title reflects perseverance and the active process of healing, recognizing that women often hold families and themselves together while facing uncertainty. It rejects the idea that everything happens for a reason and instead emphasizes finding meaning in hardship and embracing imperfect progress as a path to resilience.
