  • Always educational and fun

I learn something useful from every episode. The casual and friendly format always brings out the person behind the science. It is important to remind folks that scientists are not just emotionless robots in lab coats…

The common sense questions asked by Ben Squared makes the science I don’t know interesting. This season is my favorite. What about another episode about bloods?

  • Amazing podcast! I have never listened to podcasts until I found this one...and Ben showed me how to download a podcast app. Love the opening & closing music. Proteomics needs more death metal and polka music. You guys are halfway there. I'm encouraging (making) my students listen to this podcast as they learn proteomics and read foundational papers written by the guests. Wish I had this resource when I was entering the field. Keep it up!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 106 - Snot - Dr. Jennifer Mulligan
Q: What is the potential clinical impact of this work on treatments for nasal polyps and smell loss?
By linking mucus biomarkers to patient endotypes and response to biologics, clinicians may choose therapies more effectively, predict which patients will recover smell post-treatment, and eventually tailor interventions, including nasal supplements or targeted biologics, to individual patients.
Ep 106 - Snot - Dr. Jennifer Mulligan
Q: How have the researchers validated using nasal mucus as a surrogate for tissue?
They demonstrated that mucus composition varies by sampling site but correlates with broader airway biology; they also developed standardized collection methods and demonstrated inflammatory markers shifting pre- and post-surgery, supporting its use as a surrogate for tissue in translational studies.
Ep 106 - Snot - Dr. Jennifer Mulligan
Q: What makes snot a useful biofluid for research compared to blood or tissue?
Snot is readily accessible, reflects local mucosal processes, and can provide real-time biomarkers of airway inflammation and olfactory biology, making it valuable for hypothesis generation and tracking disease states with much less invasiveness than tissue biopsies.
Ep 105 - Bones - Dr. Charles Schurman
Q: What is the core skeletal proteome and how does it vary by site?
There is a core set of bone proteins, predominantly collagens, but the relative amounts shift by bone site due to mechanical function and metabolic demand.
Ep 104 - Tears - Dr. Lekha Sleno
Q: What is the typical tear proteome composition and its implications for detection?
A small number of proteins (top six) dominate the tear proteome, but these proteins still allow meaningful biomarker discovery; advanced workflows can probe deeper beyond the most abundant proteins to reveal less abundant, potentially informative targets.
