In the summer of 2023, reporter Dyan Neary received a tip about a problematic doctor in Pennsylvania. Families were claiming that when they sought medical care for their children, this pediatrician falsely accused them of abuse, and their children were taken away from them. The Preventionist traces this doctor’s decades-long career across multiple states, and explores the rise of a new and powerfu... more

My opinion on this show sunk the second it was said that munchausen by proxy (medical child abuse) is very rare, which is defunct information and only serves to hurt children. It is NOT very rare, and is the most deadly form of child abuse. I understand that we have a flawed system in place to protect children, but I really expected more from Serial.
This podcast raises more questions than it answers. And the answers it gives just beg more questions. Just one relatively minor query that arises is why Dyan Neary, the “investigative reporter” for this podcast, left out the names of the aggrieved-parent litigants against the hospital whose voices she amplifies on this enormous platform, when their cases are public and findable and leave very little doubt that they were abusing their children.
This is irresponsible, one-sided journalism. Who is advocating for the children in these situations? CAPs are. Please listen to “Nobody Should Believe Me” to hear the other side. Shame on your NYT.
In brief, Dyan Neary applies insufficient critical analysis in her reporting. Her perspective suggests someone who is well intentioned, but substantially out of her depth and her incompetence is damaging to child welfare.
Let's be clear: she has a PhD in creative writing, but apparently no formal training in investigative journalism.
She does not triangulate inferences from multiple independent viewpoints. She describes doing "research", and for the life of me I can't figure out what she think... more
Severely lacking in credible reporting. Where are the voices of the victims? We fail these children by sensationalist journalism. Easily able to verify the real story as one of the children was granted emancipation and told their story of medical child abuse they suffered during their upbringing. Do better, NPR!!!!
