  • My new favorite!

Thank you for a very different, super educational & unbiased podcast for any veterinary professionals, as well as pet parents.

PS- I know this is only my opinion, but PLEASE lose the background music!! (I’ve only noticed on this latest episode) I’m trying so hard & want to listen to the topic, but all I hear & keep thinking about is how much I hate the terrible background music that is completely unnecessary!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Breaking the ‘Byproduct’ Bias: Rethinking Rendered Ingredients in Pet Food
Q: Is rendered food unsafe or of lower quality for pets?
No—rendered ingredients are heavily regulated, heat-treated, and tested to meet strict specifications, making them safe and nutritionally valuable for pets.
Breaking the ‘Byproduct’ Bias: Rethinking Rendered Ingredients in Pet Food
Q: What exactly is rendering and why is it used in pet food?
Rendering is the process of converting undesired or uneaten food parts into usable fats, proteins, and minerals for feeds and other products, effectively turning waste into valuable nutrition.
Out of the Doghouse: The Truth About Pet Food’s Most-Hated Ingredients
Q: What are gag categories like gums and thickeners doing in pet foods, and can you give an everyday analogy for why these are used?
Gums and hydrocolloids stabilize textures, prevent separation, and improve mouthfeel, much like cornstarch in cooking, but with more versatility and less heat sensitivity; they enable consistently appealing products for pets.
Out of the Doghouse: The Truth About Pet Food’s Most-Hated Ingredients
Q: What makes salt so controversial, and why is it still essential in both human and pet foods?
Salt is essential for nerve signaling, muscle function, and fluid balance, and it also helps preserve foods by controlling microbial growth; the controversy largely centers on dosage and health concerns, not its fundamental necessity.
Out of the Doghouse: The Truth About Pet Food’s Most-Hated Ingredients
Q: Abbey, why do you think consumer perception around these ingredients plays such a big role in how we choose foods for ourselves and our pets?
Perception can drive trends; if enough people react negatively, companies may change formulations even if the facts don't fully support the fear, which shows how powerfully audience sentiment can shape product decisions.
