Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Pastel Podcast Episode 12: Liz Haywood-Sullivan
Q: Do you mostly work from photos or plein air, and how do you approach painting when you travel or teach abroad?
She combines observation with photography, uses photos as a reference, and often does plein air studies when possible, but emphasizes memory and sketchbook work to capture essential color and light.
Pastel Podcast Episode 12: Liz Haywood-Sullivan
Q: What is the Good Bones approach you mentioned, and how does it help students get from a thumbnail to a finished painting?
Good Bones starts with simplifying the representational image into abstract shapes, followed by a value study, scale using a viewfinder, and underpainting focused on value before color; it helps students build strong foundations.
Pastel Podcast Episode 12: Liz Haywood-Sullivan
Q: OK, so you left the design world back in, was it 1996 to pursue fine art full time? What drew you away from design into pastel and landscape painting?
She felt a natural pull to fine art, moved from corporate design to painting, and found pastel in a class by chance which hooked her; she chose landscape as her focus and never looked back.
Pastel Podcast Episode 5: Albert Handell
Q: Well, Albert, I feel like you are really one of the pioneers painting in pastels today. You started way before many others. And when did you start painting with pastels and why did you choose that medium?
Albert explains that after returning from Europe with a background in oils, a creative block led him to pastel, which felt like a totally different medium and opened up new possibilities; he began with encouragement from colleagues and found pastel to be a vibrant, water-like medium that revived his artistic momentum.
Pastel Podcast Episode 4: Harley Brown
Q: What was the turning point that pushed you to become a professional artist?
The moment when I started curating and selling portraits door-to-door after being kicked out of art school, realizing I could support myself through art, and the early gallery success that followed.
