In S1 E3, the host conveys the urgent, arduous task of using his medium, newspaper articles, to truly bring readers into this lawless, inhumane place and to “connect them as human beings with the human beings on the other side of their plate of fish.” With every episode (and I’m only three in), I find myself confronting my conscience and my duty as a consumer. I’m wrestling with how to adjust my lifestyle choices so I don’t further fuel demand for an industry that harms both ocean and human life... more
Investigative reporting at its best, and does an excellent job of conveying the visuals of the situations being reported, no mean feat in an audio format! Ian Urbina took some serious risks to report these stories, alternatively enraging and saddening in equal measures. Not an easy listen, but a gripping one.
I stumbled upon this after listening to “Sea of Lies”. Binged thus in a day and a half, and it’s really opened my eyes to what happens in and on our oceans. Fascinating stories and covers many topics.
Some reviews knock it from five stars down to four stars due to Ian’s cadence. That’s not fair. If it was out of 100 stars I could see knocking it down to 98 but the work and information far outweighs his slower talking. Just put it on 1.5 speed and you’re good to go! Don’t let some little pau... more

This is an incredibly well done and important podcast. Season 1 was excellent and season 2 is somehow even better. In a podcast landscape with more and more sloppy and poorly reported content, this is one of the best podcasts of the year and should get a lot more attention and acclaim. Chapeau to the podcast team. These are truly harrowing stories.
