  • Excellence with caring

I agree with every word of Shanny Nott’s review. I, too, make sure to catch every episode and have since April 2021. Dr. Osterholm and the team have deep and broad expertise to share and they communicate it with expressions of care for us, the listeners, and for our communities. I love the way they have broadened the content from Covid-19 coverage (still there, every episode) to so many infectious diseases that threaten the world and to public health in general. Kudos to the whole production tea... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 208: Bad News, Good News
Q: Why is vaccine effectiveness data still important if hospitalizations are already down?
Understanding real-world vaccine effectiveness helps guide public health decisions, vaccination strategies, and messaging, especially as immunity wanes and new variants emerge.
Episode 208: Bad News, Good News
Q: The Paxlovid results seem to imply bad news and good news at the same time. How should clinicians interpret this?
Paxlovid didn't fail; in a highly immune population with low baseline risk, the marginal benefit is smaller, but there is still antiviral activity and faster recovery, so clinicians should be selective about prescribing it.
Episode 207: Asking the Right Questions
Q: What does CIDRAP's Vaccine Integrity Project mean for current vaccine policy, and what are the three reviews focusing on musculations this season?
CIDRAP's Vaccine Integrity Project emphasizes transparent, evidence-based reviews of vaccines (HPV, Tdap in pregnancy) and three respiratory immunization protocols (COVID, RSV, flu), developed with input from medical societies and state public health officials to counter misinformation and guide policy.
Episode 206: What we know about long COVID
Q: What is the state of long COVID research and resources available for tracking developments?
Research is ongoing with observational and some clinical trials; major NIH efforts like RECOVER are central, but funding and political climate can slow progress; resources are available on the RECOVER website and through CIDRAP News updates.
Episode 206: What we know about long COVID
Q: Does vaccination mitigate long COVID, and what do studies show about risk reduction?
Observational studies generally indicate vaccination lowers the risk of long COVID by reducing severe disease, though the magnitude of protection varies by study; some studies show meaningful reductions after one or more doses, while others show more modest effects.
