  • Invaluable

This has given me so much helpful information as a first year teacher. String content is very hard to come by, which makes this invaluable.

  • This is the podcast I desperately needed!

I’m new to being an orchestra teacher and need every bit of advice and guidance I can get. At TMEA this year I was fortunate enough to be in one of Mr. Laux’s sessions and walked away thoroughly excited. Within 5 minutes I had subscribed to this podcast and had all the episodes downloaded. I listened the entire trip home (3 hours from San Antonio to San Angelo) and every chance I have gotten since. Keep them coming PLEASE!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

103. Dr. Tamara Dworetz: Leading with Passion, Purpose, and Presence
Q: What advice do you have for educators interested in going the professional conductor route?
I would say if you can afford it, the more time you can have building the skills with higher-level ensembles, the better, including considering a second masters in conducting.
103. Dr. Tamara Dworetz: Leading with Passion, Purpose, and Presence
Q: What are some things that you see high school conductors do?
I see teachers struggle with compartmentalizing between classroom management and the artistic aspects, often coming up to the podium in a policing manner instead of fostering a space of vulnerability and sharing.
103. Dr. Tamara Dworetz: Leading with Passion, Purpose, and Presence
Q: What would you say was one of the pivotal experiences that you've had?
I would say probably there's two experiences I got during my doctorate at Boston University: conducting the overture to Candide with Boston Pops and participating in the Dallas Opera Heart Institute for Women Conductors.
103. Dr. Tamara Dworetz: Leading with Passion, Purpose, and Presence
Q: Can you tell us about some of the trials and tribulations and some of the things that you had to go through, if any?
I think I've been really lucky and I think there's never been anything overt, no overt sexism that I've experienced, but there's a tendency for people to be a little more suspect of a woman leader.
121. Dr. Annalisa Chang discusses inclusion, student leadership, and her journey from higher ed to the high school orchestra classroom
Q: What are the unique things you do with your program?
Having students work as TAs or peer mentors in the orchestra program, allowing them to play active roles and motivate younger musicians is unique.
