Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Matt Tecu
Q: What's it like going through different genres in the same week, and how do you keep your vocabulary fresh to fit into varied projects?
My vocabulary comes from a lifetime of listening to everything—from Charlie Parker to Beethoven to Black Sabbath—and I adapt by borrowing tasteful fills and textures from that wide range to serve the song, not to prove I can play every style perfectly.
Matt Tecu
Q: Can you talk a little bit about your approach to drumming, especially in the studio where you're not the one in the spotlight but the lighting guy for the track?
I see drums as an accompanying instrument, not a solo showcase. I focus on the mood and the vibe to support the melody and lyrics, and I avoid overplaying to let the vocalist shine; my value comes from contributing ideas and knowing how to elevate the song without stepping on the singer.
John Berry - 29th Annual Christmas with John Berry
Q: What are the challenges of maintaining a long-running holiday tour and avoiding burnout?
Berry describes planning well in advance, reserving legacy dates, coordinating with venues, and keeping energy up through rehearsals and family support.
John Berry - 29th Annual Christmas with John Berry
Q: When you set up this tour, how much of a rotation do you aim for year to year with the set list?
Berry explains that they keep a core set for yearly expectations but rotate in new songs every year, trying to balance familiarity with fresh material.
Derek Frank - Origin Story
Q: What drew you to make Origin Story after leaving Shania Twain's tour?
I wanted a creative outlet where I could focus on my own material and direction, which led me to record Origin Story shortly after returning from the tour and recognizing the need for a personal project.
