  • Out of state bashing

Want to start by saying I really enjoy the podcast. But I must say that I REALLY didn’t appreciate the out of state hunter bashing of episode 205. I guess you Kansas waterfowlers are much better than the rest of us.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode #278 The Secret Life of American White Pelicans
Q: What are the main threats to pelicans, and how is the data about Great Salt Lake relevant to their future?
Threats include drought reducing water bodies and prey availability, habitat loss around breeding colonies, and human-made factors like water use and data-center water consumption; tracking pelicans helps understand how these stressors affect migration, breeding, and survival.
Episode #278 The Secret Life of American White Pelicans
Q: How do pelicans' feeding habits work, and what makes their foraging efficient in groups?
Pelicans use cooperative feeding to corral schools of fish into shallows where they perform synchronized scoops; group foraging increases prey capture rates and is aided by their large, expandable pouches and the vocal/physical coordination within flocks.
Episode #278 The Secret Life of American White Pelicans
Q: Can you talk about the migration range and patterns of the pelicans around the Great Salt Lake?
Pelicans migrate north in spring, with most leaving for cooler waters in mid-October and returning in March; some individuals stay year-round near open water, while others travel to Mexico or the Salton Sea, and there are two meta-populations split by the Rocky Mountains.
Episode #279 The Mystery of the Sora Rail
Q: Tell us about your background and how you got into marsh bird research.
The guest describes growing up around biology with a father who worked as a biologist, early exposure to conservation, and a path through environmental science into marsh bird research, including graduate work on Ridgway's Rail and subsequent field studies.
Episode #275 Spencer Lewis Returns | Social Media, Pressure & The Future of Waterfowl Culture
Q: How did your new content project start, and where are you at now?
Spencer explains that he's exploring a more long-form, thoughtful format and considering turning his current work into a formal podcast while continuing to develop The Humble Outdoorsman concept.
