  • Flooded Corn

Your recent episode covering flooded was very one sided. Tony made the comment about the increase in the amount of corn grown in the Dakotas but never once mentioned the amount of flooded unharvested corn in the comparison. The issue is the flooded unharvested corn not dry fields. Here in eastern Washington the amount of corn ponds is alarming. It has completely changed the ducks habits and privatized a public resource.

I really enjoy your podcast but in the future it would be great if when yo... more

EP 669. Texas Waterfowl History: Stories, Lessons That Stuck (Part 2)
Q: Describe that world to me. Are the trains even around by then?
The world was built on river travel and coastal camps; early Texas duck hunting relied on boats, rivers, and moving populations, with trains and river routes enabling distant hunting cultures to converge.
EP 663. Wading into The Corn Maze
Q: What is the biggest misconception about flooded corn?
Many hunters believe that corn in and of itself is just empty calories and not part of high-quality habitat for waterfowl.
EP 663. Wading into The Corn Maze
Q: What should hunters focus on to improve waterfowl populations?
They should focus on improving habitat management locally and understanding the broader ecological factors affecting migrating birds.
EP 663. Wading into The Corn Maze
Q: What is the role of social media in this debate?
Social media amplifies personal opinions and anecdotal experiences rather than constructive discussions, leading to divisive arguments.
EP 663. Wading into The Corn Maze
Q: Why is flooded corn such a powerful symbol in this debate?
It is tempting to use it as a scapegoat for declining mallard populations because it seems like it could be the answer to why mallards are not going south.
