Wary Newfoundlanders contemplate an invitation to join the Canadian confederation.
In the first year of its existence, Canada faces a province seeking to leave the union, and the assassination of one of its leading politicians.
The podcast takes a pause in the narrative to field questions from listeners.
Two and a half years after the Quebec Conference, and after bitter debates, dead-ends, political pressure of dubious constitutionality from London, two elections in New Brunswick, and an invasion or two, confederation finally comes into effect.

I am a recent immigrant from the behemoth to the south and found podcasting through this series. I am on Episode 175 (current and waiting for each week’s feed). I’m going to ace the citizenship exam in a couple of years. I listen to the History of the Germans and this podcast and they are both the highlight of each week. more
An excellent, ambitious, detailed and balanced walk through Canadian history. One of the best history podcasts that I’ve found anywhere.
Fantastic history podcast that gets deeply into the interaction between Native people & Europeans — not because the podcast is specifically about First Nations, but because they play such a huge & active role in early Canadian history. Very different from early US history, & much more interesting IMHO!
I’m on episode 10, really enjoying this! Very engaging.
I get that all podcasts are presented from a perspective. But I turned this off after the introductory episode. There was just too much kissing of Trudeau’s feet and waxing eloquent about how wonderful Liberals are, compared to those vile xenophobes (i.e., everyone else).
