  • Great and useful podcast for new managers

I've only been a manager for a few years and so I'm continuing to learn how to manage people, processes, and substantive matters. As a former litigation attorney who has transitioned to a non-legal role, I'm aware that lawyers tend to be terrible managers! This podcast has helped me tremendously.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

408: Why AI Makes Human Thinking More Valuable, Not Less with Dr. Vivienne Ming
Q: So maybe kick us off here with, how do you look at AI and what it's doing to the workplace, and what we should be thinking about and preparing for when it comes to AI with work?
Ming argues that AI will not merely replace humans but will shift value toward guiding, interpreting, and exploring ill-posed problems, with humans and AI complementing each other to tackle unknowns.
406: What to Do Instead of “Pushing Though” During Tough Times with Jay Abbasi
Q: What practices help people recharge during high-pressure seasons?
The host and guest discuss the 'fundamental six'—healthy diet and hydration, sufficient sleep, physical fitness, social connection, mental fitness (e.g., meditation, flow activities), and positive consumption (books/podcasts). They emphasize regular, intentional integration of these activities to maintain energy.
406: What to Do Instead of “Pushing Though” During Tough Times with Jay Abbasi
Q: What are the ARIA steps and how can listeners apply them in tough moments?
ARIA stands for Accept, Reflect, Inspect, Act. Accept the situation, reflect on what you've learned and what this means, inspect your options and what's in your control, then take a concrete next action to move forward.
406: What to Do Instead of “Pushing Though” During Tough Times with Jay Abbasi
Q: How do you define resilience and when does it come into play?
Resilience is more about adaptability than forcing through; it's the ability to adjust to changing environments while maintaining clarity, energy, and focus, especially during high-demand times.
402: The Missing Link Between Communication and Connection with Nidhi Tewari
Q: What advice do you have for leaders when conversations become emotionally charged?
Pause, regulate your nervous system, listen, validate, and gradually guide the other person toward a shared understanding, using a menu of options to empower the other person rather than forcing a single solution.
