  • Great and useful podcast for new managers

I've only been a manager for a few years and so I'm continuing to learn how to manage people, processes, and substantive matters. As a former litigation attorney who has transitioned to a non-legal role, I'm aware that lawyers tend to be terrible managers! This podcast has helped me tremendously.

  • Great direction for an overlooked audience

In my work as a DEI facilitator and consultant, I often see managers who are expected to be “all things” but don’t get the training and support to do it well. While we can challenge our organizations to do this differently, this podcast serves as a helpful guide for mid-level managers to build their people and management skills along the way.

396: Mental Performance: Combining High Expectations and High Support with Evan Marks
Q: How can a manager start developing this skill set?
Start with self-awareness, understand triggers, create cognitive space before responding, and build a personal evidence bank through small, repeatable actions that prove you can handle tough situations.
396: Mental Performance: Combining High Expectations and High Support with Evan Marks
Q: What is mental performance and why is it important for managers?
Mental performance is the disciplined training of our emotional and cognitive states to manage stress, fear, and uncertainty so we can respond consciously rather than react impulsively, leading to better decisions and calmer leadership.
397: How to Communicate So People Listen, Care, and Take Action with Andy Freed
Q: Can you give us a story or example of how a message can change from lack of forethought to embodying the think-feel-do framework?
He recounts a law firm that open guidance to a cafeteria without context, causing rumors and resentment; the lack of think-feel-do caused misinterpretation. By aligning the why (think), the empathy and feeling (feel), and the actionable step (do), the firm could have communicated effectively and avoided the collapse that followed.
397: How to Communicate So People Listen, Care, and Take Action with Andy Freed
Q: Tell us about think, feel, do.
Andy explains that you must design a message by considering what you want the audience to think, feel, and do before building slides or delivering content. He uses Bruce Springsteen as a practical example to illustrate planning the audience's emotional journey and the concrete next steps, rather than just presenting data.
