  • I listen EVERYDAY!

I learned about this guys through the TIA and stumbled across their podcast. I listened to one of the episodes and was completely hooked. Nate and Ben give great advice for both new and experienced freight brokers. I make it a point to listen to an episode before I start my day and when I am winding down. Do yourself a favor and start with episode #124: Setting Goals if you are looking for practical advice to get started and measure yourself!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When Freight Goes Wrong Who Owns The Damage | Final Mile 147
Q: Do you think it's worth it to start a freight brokerage business in twenty twenty six? If so, how can I start as a 1099 contractor without experience?
Yes, there are opportunities in 2026, especially after excess capacity exited and rates are favorable. For a 1099 contractor without experience, consider starting under an established brokerage or agent program to learn the ropes, build a customer base, and progressively take on more responsibility before striking out on your own.
Real-World Crisis Calls In Freight Brokerage | Final Mile 145
Q: When market rates are rising and a customer says it's too expensive, how should a broker respond without losing the load or damaging the relationship?
Educate the customer about market conditions, present alternative options, offer a trial or time-bound reevaluation, and use data-driven explanations to help the customer understand why rates are changing and when they might lock in lower rates.
Real-World Crisis Calls In Freight Brokerage | Final Mile 145
Q: After the Montgomery Supreme Court decision, what does a defensible carrier vetting process actually look like for freight brokers?
Have a clearly documented SOP that is consistently applied to every carrier, ensure buy-in from all staff, and implement a policy that uses defined thresholds and a carrier compliance director to approve or reject carriers based on measurable criteria.
Real-World Crisis Calls In Freight Brokerage | Final Mile 145
Q: What should a broker do when a carrier is threatening self harm or violence over a payment dispute?
Deescalate the situation, document all interactions, and, if there is any concern for safety, contact local authorities while continuing to pursue payment through appropriate channels and debrief with internal policy and SOPs.
How Much Risk Can A Broker Really Ignore | Final Mile 144
Q: What are you really worried about when dealing with a new MC?
Worries include the risk of theft or fraud, questions about whether to require longer-established authority, and the importance of performing thorough vetting beyond basic checks, recognizing that brand-new carriers can still be legitimate if properly reviewed.
