  • heartwarming..

This was such a compelling episode to listen to, especially with how openly it shared the emotional and physical challenges Darlene faced while raising her children in the Army. I appreciated how the storytelling highlighted both vulnerability and strength in such a human way.

  • Used to be.

New review: I was very excited when this show was rebooted with Hilary as host. Now, I find myself skipping it every time. There are like 60 episodes of the Accidental Gay Parents, episodes about people who don’t even want kids and every week is a recommendation for The Oprah Podcast. I’m not sure what Hilary’s goal here is, but I’m not into whatever this is.

    Old review:

  • Confused by the direction of the show

Really enjoy this show and the diverse and unique parenting experiences. But confused by the back to backs of the Accidental Gay Parent episodes? Enjoy those stories but also missing the range of experiences that they previously covered.

  • Enjoying this podcast

As a retired woman with grown kids and no grandchildren, I don’t think I’m the target audience. However, I’ve loved every episode. It’s so wonderful to hear honest real stories that weren’t available to me during my childbearing years, when I felt like I was navigating alone. Grateful and happy the world has moved forward for younger women today.

LST FAVES: How To Not (Accidentally) Raise A Racist
Q: What role should teachers play in these conversations?
Teachers can integrate multicultural content year-round with a framework that includes diverse books, stories, and activities, and coordinate with parents so conversations align with home goals while staying age-appropriate.
LST FAVES: How To Not (Accidentally) Raise A Racist
Q: How do you talk to young children about what black means when they ask?
Explain that race is about skin color and cultural backgrounds, acknowledge the complexity, and use simple, truthful language. Use concrete examples and avoid assigning value judgments to different groups, and be prepared to revisit the conversation as they grow.
LST FAVES: How To Not (Accidentally) Raise A Racist
Q: Is it okay for children to describe people by how they look?
Describing what someone looks like is fine as a factual descriptor, but avoid attaching stereotypes or judgments to that description. If a child asks about someone's race, answer honestly and provide context about culture, history, and identity rather than labeling people in a way that reinforces biases.
Jamilah Lemieux on Black Single Motherhood
Q: What was your biggest fear when you were pregnant?
She feared becoming a single mother and felt trapped in a nightmare, despite moments of hope and happiness.
Jamilah Lemieux on Black Single Motherhood
Q: Okay, I want to fast forward a little bit in the story. Tell me the story of how you met your daughter's father.
Jamila describes meeting two Chicago friends who moved to New York, their initial flirtation and eventual courtship, and how they grew close while navigating freelance life and shared interests.
