  • Accessible, funny and informative

I love this podcast. It keeps me up to date with news and reviews of all sorts of shows without ever straying into pretentiousness. The way the three hosts riff with each other is very engaging. The episodes fly by.

  • Cheers from the dress circle

Today, I accidentally discovered that Nancy, Nick, and Nick carried on the Evening Standard Theatre Podcast independently – and it MADE MY DAY! I'm not based in London and so you might be forgiven for thinking I’d have limited use for a reviews podcast. Yet these three seasoned critics' lively review chats and interviews are not only a reasonably lighthearted and reasonably thoughtful little window into some stuff currently going on in London theatre. Much more than that, they simply are such an... more

  • A fine balance

Smart, funny, knowledgeable, good hinterland, no posturing. Like eavesdropping on three friends riffing off each other. Going to the theatre is a high risk investment - I feel like I could rely on these guys. The interview segment is a welcome change of pace. Excellent production.

  • The show MUST go on…. PLEASE!

Witty, relaxed and truly informative - a joy to listen to these three theatre titans wax lyrical about the latest shows to see. Even booked tickets off the back of listening to shows I wouldn’t had previously considered. Keep it up Nancy, Nick and Nick!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! (Plus Reggae, Roxanne & Churchill's Loo)
Q: This week's quiz question is about Cyrano de Bergerac, who I have just discovered was in fact a real person. He was a soldier as most aristocrats were at the time and a writer. But two of his three satirical novels are considered among the earliest classics in what genre?
The correct answer is B. Science fiction, as the novels feature lunar travel and fantastical elements that place Cyrano's other works in an early science fiction context.
Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner in Les Liaison Dangereuses, Noah Jupe and Sadie Sink in Romeo & Juliet
Q: What did you think of Noah Jupe and Sadie Sink in Romeo and Juliet?
They delivered a powerful, intimate performance that grounded the romance with a naturalism that made the famous lines feel fresh and live, especially in contrast to the bold directorial choices.
Maggie Siff, Nancy Carroll, Bird Grove and Evening All Afternoon
Q: For those who don't know Shadowlands, tell us what it's about.
The play explores love, loss, faith, and the way CS Lewis's life intersected with Joy Davidman, a New York poet who challenged and transformed his beliefs and life perspective during a terminal illness.
Summerfolk, Lisa Spirling, ROI, Beatrice Penny-Touré
Q: Hello. You are about to open your second production as AD, Choir Boy. Tell us a little bit about it.
Choir Boy centers on a young Black American student navigating sexuality and the pressures of an elite choir, with gospel-infused performances that underscore themes of identity, resilience, and community. Lisa Spirling explains her hopes for the show's impact in Stratford East and its relevance to diverse audiences.
Matt Willis, Marie and Rosetta, The Holy Rosenbergs
Q: But your audition for the show was quite fraught, wasn't it?
Matt Willis discusses the chaotic travel to London for the audition, the welcoming room, and how the experience contrasted with typical auditions, concluding it was a joyful and freeing process that helped him land the role.
