Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meredith Hawkins and Nihal Thomas on type 5 diabetes
Q: Meredith, what do we know at this point about treatment and prevention, if anything?
We have a great example in the case of Jamaica, where it all started in terms of the classification.
Meredith Hawkins and Nihal Thomas on type 5 diabetes
Q: Nihal, with all that in mind and of course, the complexity of the pathophysiology and the likely risk factors of this condition, how did you go about coming to a consensus after all these years?
We assembled a group of around 40 individuals across the world... we laid down some rough criteria as to how we should go forward.
Senjuti Saha on the health-care burden of RSV in Bangladesh
Q: What did you find in that modeling?
Mathematical modeling showed that a maternal RSV vaccine could reduce admissions by 38%, preventing 130 deaths, while the monoclonal antibody could lead to a 69% drop in admissions, potentially preventing 260 deaths.
Senjuti Saha on the health-care burden of RSV in Bangladesh
Q: Can you tell us broadly about the current burden of RSV disease in the setting of this study?
RSV is a major respiratory pathogen, with low-resource communities experiencing the most severe outcomes. In Bangladesh, data on RSV severity and seasonality is sparse, but studies show it causes significant hospital admissions and is a leading cause of pneumonia and sepsis in infants.
Michael Udedi and Kazione Kulisewa on implementing depression care in Malawi
Q: What do you think can be done to move mental illnesses up the agenda?
Investment in mental health should continue, integrating mental health into primary health care, and collaboration with research partners will help to prioritize and address mental health issues.
