Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Spotlight to Seafloor | John Garvin on The Journey
Q: What was it like working with James Cameron and on Sanctum?
It was a demanding but rewarding experience where I trained actors in advanced diving and contributed to script development. Sanctum drew on real cave-diving incidents in Australia, and witnessing Cameron's blend of engineering genius and storytelling was transformative for my career.
From Spotlight to Seafloor | John Garvin on The Journey
Q: How did your early life and move to Australia influence your path into diving and film?
Growing up in a fishing village in England and later moving to Australia, I chased both theatre and the sea. The shift toward diving came from an enduring love of the ocean and storytelling, which eventually intertwined through writing scripts and collaborating on underwater filmmaking.
From Fruit Flies to HotHouse – Rob Scott’s creative journey in the arts.
Q: How has the regional arts scene evolved since you first arrived?
The scene grew dramatically, with Fruit Flyers, HotHouse Theatre, and multiple schools and amateur groups creating a dynamic, collaborative ecosystem that supports young artists and long-term projects alike.
From Fruit Flies to HotHouse – Rob Scott’s creative journey in the arts.
Q: What was your entry point into the Fruit Flyers story and how did it shape your life here?
I came to see a Fruit Flyers show, filmed it, and that connection led to a documentary project. It ultimately kept me here for decades as I deepened my involvement with the ensembles and training programs.
From Fruit Flies to HotHouse – Rob Scott’s creative journey in the arts.
Q: Are you born and bred in the region, or did you move here later in life?
I moved to Aubrey in 1987 after being drawn to the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and the potential of making documentaries here; the move became a long-term commitment to the region and to the arts community.
