  • Wonderful Resource

New to Jazz. Like most, I ordered the JRB. The song analysis and example playing is wonderful as a rapid on-ramp to the harmonic structure and melodic rhythm. Keep it up please! Also, it would be great to have an easily accessible archive of just the JRB analysis portions of the show so that when I sit down weekly to learn a new standard I can cross reference this archive to walk through the song with you! Thank you again for this unique resource!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Footprints and Miles Davis' Miles Smiles (With Guest Mike Kaplan)
Q: What are your thoughts on the overall direction of Miles Smiles compared to earlier Miles Davis groups?
Mike Kaplan describes it as Miles's most abstract pre-electric period, highlighting the reduced piano anchoring, the openness in harmonic structure, and the way the band improvises with less predefined harmony, creating a uniquely global, exploratory sound.
Miles Davis- Miles In The Sky
Q: Steve, what is your overall perspective on this record in the context of Miles Davis's evolution?
Steve describes Miles In The Sky as a bold, transitional record that pushes into electric textures and long-form improvisation, setting the stage for Bitches Brew and the fusion era while still rooted in the Second Great Quintet's collaborative approach.
Herbie Hancock-Speak Like A Child
Q: So, Steve, when did you become aware of this record?
Steve explains he encountered the record later, after college, contrasting his early Miles Davis-based exposure with Hancock's own work on this album, and notes the unique trio-plus-frontline arrangement.
Simon Mogul Interview
Q: How did you approach preparing for a recording with a band you had not worked with before?
Simon explains the session was built on trust, spontaneity, and listening, rather than over-rehearsal, trusting the musicians to respond in the moment and Curtis Lundy's guidance to keep the music communicative and musical.
Martin Wind Interview
Q: So can you talk a little bit about the trio itself and how you went about this recording?
Wind discusses bringing Peter Weniger and Jonas Burgwinkel together, the decision to revisit Gravity as a joint venture and later reframe it as a project under Wind's name, and the atmosphere and preparation that contributed to a cohesive, warm sound in the studio.
