  • The good outweighs the rest

We should be most thanks full to hear the voices of these masters. That’s the real gift here. More than makes up for the constant interrupting, talking over guests, asking long, wandering questions which sometimes just never land coherently, and a feverish attempt to out-hip himself, the guest and the rest of the world. Having said that just the effort to accumulate this body of work is incredible and should be celebrated.

  • Shut up and let the guests speak Jake!

This has to be one of the most frustrating podcasts ever. Jake gets great guests, god knows how because he interrupts them with his rambling attempts to show off how cool he is. i just noticed he’s sniffing quite a bit in the Miroslav Vitous interview, maybe he has a cold but he’s certainly giving off coke head energy

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The James Alan Hatch Interview
Q: Do you think quantization is essential in modern music, or is there a value in keeping a round rhythm through human feel?
Quantization can be overused; keeping a round, cyclical rhythm and allowing some looseness preserves the human feel and soul of the performance.
The James Alan Hatch Interview
Q: You mentioned pocket therapy and communal listening; how did those ideas develop in the early days of the band?
We started by focusing on listening and staying in a groove for extended periods, which helped us create space for each other and let the music breathe rather than jumble together busy parts.
The Tyrone Allen Interview
Q: Can you share a defining gig that taught you a hard truth about the music business?
A story from a Columbia Station gig highlighted the need for paying dues and the reality that gigs aren't always smooth, but the lesson was to stay aware, adaptable, and grounded in the craft.
The Tyrone Allen Interview
Q: How did your education at Eastman and Berkeley shape your approach to live performance versus studio work?
The live scene in DC and New York, plus the mentorship from elder players, was crucial; the formal training provided technique, but the real education came from playing with diverse musicians and being in the room.
The Tyrone Allen Interview
Q: What does it mean to push the boundaries of American music while staying true to its emotional core?
It means honoring a wide range of influences while not being afraid to let personal feeling and groove guide the music, ensuring that the work remains authentic even as the listener experiences new textures.
