Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

62. All about microcement & decorative plaster finishes with Maison Anna B
Q: Can microcement be used on timber substrates or in ceilings?
Microcement is not ideal on timber because timber moves and can crack the finish; it works best on solid substrates with proper preparation, and careful handling around joints and fixtures.
62. All about microcement & decorative plaster finishes with Maison Anna B
Q: Where is microcement most popular to use now?
Bathrooms and shower spaces are particularly popular due to ease of cleaning and lack of grout lines, with walls and sometimes kitchen areas or furniture being finished in microcement.
62. All about microcement & decorative plaster finishes with Maison Anna B
Q: What is microcement and how is it different from regular plaster?
Microcement is a 1.5 millimeter coating made from cement, polymers, resin, and natural pigments; it creates a durable, waterproof skin on walls or floors and is much thinner than traditional polished concrete or plaster layers.
61. Architect Courtney McDonnell on collaborating on site
Q: What's your approach to collaboration with interior designers and other specialists on a project?
Interior designers often come in late, which can create friction and scope confusion. It's important to establish responsibilities early, share drawings and details through the architect to the contractor, and coordinate between the interior designer and architect to ensure the doors, finishes, and fittings align with the architectural plan.
61. Architect Courtney McDonnell on collaborating on site
Q: How do you handle conflicts or delays with contractors or workers, and what advice would you give others facing similar issues?
Directly address issues with the contractor, avoid involving the client in every dispute, and have a backup plan. If a critical drawing or steel detail is delayed, have a candid conversation, possibly replace the underperforming contractor, and keep the client informed when delays threaten the timeline.
