  • Great content, can’t understand

    Great selection of papers

The lady with the accent is very difficult to understand. She needs to speak slower, at times she speeds up and I cannot follow what she is saying. I am speaking for a lot of people probably too

Please slow it down and also try to speak about limitations in the studies more frequently

  • Love love love this podcast.

The content is solid and I garner new insight from every episode. Even though I focus mostly on immunooncology, I appreciate the wide diversity of the topics covered as they expand my thinking about cancer into directions I might not have gone otherwise. I look forward to long road trips catching up on old episodes.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 135: “Olfactory Receptors Beyond the Nose” Featuring Dr. Marco Orecchioni
Q: Why would macrophages express these receptors at all?
Expressing chemosensory receptors may provide macrophages with a fast, local sensing mechanism to detect environmental cues—such as metabolites or microbiota-derived compounds—allowing them to tailor their responses to the tissue context, including inflammatory or reparative programs.
Ep. 135: “Olfactory Receptors Beyond the Nose” Featuring Dr. Marco Orecchioni
Q: What are olfactory receptors and how do they fit into the immune system beyond smell?
Olfactory receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors capable of detecting a variety of chemicals; in immune cells like macrophages, they appear to sense local chemical environments and modulate signaling pathways such as calcium flux and inflammasome activation, thereby influencing inflammatory responses.
Ep. 133: “From Microbes to Immune Responses” Featuring Dr. Samuel Nobs
Q: How do you model lung-microbiome interactions given the challenges of oxygen needs and tissue complexity?
We use lung organoids derived from pluripotent stem cells to recapitulate alveolar or airway tissue and study microbe-host interactions in a controlled, mechanistic system, complemented by germ-free mice for causal studies.
Ep. 133: “From Microbes to Immune Responses” Featuring Dr. Samuel Nobs
Q: What are the main cellular players in the lung that interact with the microbiome?
Epithelial cells at the barrier, particularly alveolar type 1 and type 2 cells, are important sensors and mediators; alveolar macrophages also play a role in responding to microbes that enter the alveolar space.
Ep. 133: “From Microbes to Immune Responses” Featuring Dr. Samuel Nobs
Q: Outside of science, why do we care about the lung microbiome, given the lung is often thought of as sterile?
The host and microbes in the lung engage in dynamic interactions where commensals may shape local immunity and inflammatory responses, and disease states show shifts in microbial composition that could influence outcomes.
