Each week, horticulturalist Felder Rushing shares stories, answers questions and just talks gardening. Of course, you’ll hear a bit of “cheesy music” in every program and you might hear a bad joke or two as well. The Gestalt Gardener is a long-time favorite on MPB Think Radio, due in no small part to Felder’s laid-back, your-neighbors-might-talk-but-so-what approach to gardening.

  • Not good

I know Felder, met him a few times.

To a true beginning gardener who knows absolutely nothing about plants, biology, etc. Felder is an ok starting point.

However, to a gardener with any basic knowledge, Felder’s advice leaves much to be desired.

Oftentimes, Felder feels stuck in the 1980’s, as most of his plant recommendations have been out of fashion for decades. He clearly has not kept up with trends in horticulture, and if he has, he certainly does not relay that info to his audienc... more

  • Felder Rushing is the most charming and knowledgeable gardening expert you could ask for. I don't think I really qualify as a gardener but Felder makes me dream of a much bigger garden. He keeps me laughing and smiling and always forgives his listeners their gardening sins.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Gestalt Gardener | Mosquito Hawks and Praying Mantises
Q: What is the best way to deal with termites in raised beds without harming the garden?
Use a termite-targeted insecticide or products labeled for fire ants applied to bare soil around the beds, water in well, and avoid overwatering; this reduces termite activity without needing heavy chemical treatments in the roots.
The Gestalt Gardener | Daffodils & Pub Talk
Q: What is the best approach to dealing with daffodils after flowering?
Do not dig them up while they are blooming; mark their location and dig them later when they have finished flowering to protect roots and ensure next year's bloom.
The Gestalt Gardener | Gray, Scraggly Strands
Q: Should I put lime around my clementis every two or three years?
You only need to add lime if you have very acidic soil. Most plants will tolerate a wide range of soil pH.
The Gestalt Gardener | Gray, Scraggly Strands
Q: Is it a good time to cut back my Endless Summer Hydrangeas?
Yes, now is a great time to cut them back since they bloom on new wood.
The Gestalt Gardener | How Did Felder's Plants Fare?
Q: What should I do if my grocery store roses sheltered in the pot and shed during the freeze?
You should prune them now and consider repotting them.
